I think it's a good movie worth watching. You might want to read the book because they did change some things, but you dont need to read it to understand the movie. Hope I helped!

Yes, 'Tex' is worth watching. No, you don't need to read the book first. It is a good book though, so I do recommend it if you have the time.

------------

'Tex', 1hr&42mn, rated "PG" by the MPAA for Adult Situations, Adult Language, Drug References, Mild Violence & Mild Gore
***1/2 (Out of ****)

'Tex' is not as whimsical or artistically made as 'The Outsiders' or 'Rumble Fish'. It's a very good movie in it's own right. It handles growing up fast and dealing with adult responsibilities better than 'The Outsiders' did. Very relavant to young people and worth watching.

The movie 'Tex' is very close to the book. Maybe about 95% accurate. Most notable change is the name of Tex's horse. In the book he's Negrito, in the movie he's Rowdy. There's even two small cameos from two characters from S.E. Hinton's novel 'That Was Then...This is Now'.

Easily one of the most underrated films from the early eighties.

I didn't read the book and I liked this movie. It's mainly about characters and that's something I like. One thing though - I've read alot of posts of those that did read the book, and alot of them are kinda negative about the film - like it didn't translate well.
