Ok - this has to be the most unknown film in the world. What the hell is it about???

Easygoing, thoughtless, and direct, Tex at fifteen likes everyone and everything, especially his horse, Negrito, and Johnny Collins's blue-eyed sister, Jamie. He thinks life with his seventeen-year-old brother, Mason, in their ramshackle house would be just about perfect if only Mace would stop complaining about Pop. Pop hasn't been home in five months. Mace wants to get out of Oklahoma. Tex just seems to attract trouble and danger . . . Suddenly everything's falling apart.

I love this movie. I think it should still be a popular teen movie like other 80s movies still are today.

Steve- Hey Soda do you think this makes me look tuff?
Soda- I think it makes you look different

reply

I think they changed the name of the horse because Negrito sounds like Negro, which could potentially offend people.

i thought they changed the horses name to rowdy cuz that was the real horses name, u cant just change an animals name 4 a movie, it would be confusing for an animal.

They could for two scenes! First was with Tex calling it Rowdy and the second was with the little girl calling it Gentleman. They called the horse 2 different names in the film so why does it matter if they changed the name for it anyway?

reply

No, the horse's real name was Toyota. It was Susan E. Hinton's horse, by the way.

"Tex" is a forgotten classic. It's a really good film, a million times better than movies from that time like "Footloose" that are just ridiculous. This is actually a serious film, but it is so low key, i think it just never found it's audience. If you look at it today it resembles an indie/arthouse film that never got a proper chance in theaters. It's also like a time capsule watching it, the way it captures the era so perfectly. And the lack of a tacky pop music soundtrack and trendy early 80's fashions helps..the film has aged really well. I think the fact that it is so unknown makes it even more special.

Unfortunately it was never released in Europe, I think. At least not in my country. I don't know why it never hit the cinemas, Matt Dillon already was very popular over here back then. There is no dvd for region 2 available, either. Such a shame. I found a way to watch the film, finally, but could not buy it.

reply

I'm glad you got a chance to see "Tex" anyway. Before the internet it would have been nearly impossible to find some of these movies so it is great that people care enough about these old films to share them online. I hope you liked the movie.

I read the book in English* when I was a teenager, so you can imagine how long I had to wait to watch the film. I liked it but found Jim Metzler a bit too old to play Mason.

* English books were hard to come by, too, back then, and usually they were dead expensive.

When it comes to the SE Hinton adaptions, my favorite is by far Rumble Fish. The Outsiders is pretty good too, but Rumble Fish is just a far greater film. Rumble Fish is, in my mind, a criminally underrated film with brilliant Coppola direction, an innovative and fantastic film score, and has far more artistic merit than The Outsiders. It's one of the best damn films of the 1980s, as far as I'm concerned. Incidentally, I know most people feel lukewarm about the acting in Rumble Fish and give Rourke all praise. But in all honesty, saying Rourke (who is excellent, by the way) gave the film's only noteworthy performance... is BS. Sure, Dillon doesn't steal the show as Rusty James like he did as Dally, but I still think that he delivered a - slightly - better performance in Rumble Fish. The guy holds his own against Rourke, convincingly conveys his emotions, and carries the film all the way through. The rest of the cast (especially Hopper) is very good as well.

But back to the topic. I really liked Tex. It's a realistic, inspiring, engaging, and flawlessly acted film. It might not be as skillfully directed or as exciting as The Outsiders, but it is one fine film nevertheless -- and yes, I do prefer it to The Outsiders. Also, as much as I admire Dillon's work in Rumble Fish, I have to say that his best performance in an SE Hinton film adaption, is definitely in Tex. Great film.

What do you think the teacher's gonna look like this year?

Older movies, as a rule, don't generate that much board traffic. It isn't as though this were a "Godfather" or a "Gone With the Wind".
