When do the events of the movie and of the book take place?

When to the events of the movie and of the book take place? What year, what months, which days of the months, et cetera?

Book continuity-wise, I'd say sometime in the mid-1970s.

HERE'S MY MATH:
I'm basing that on the fact "The Outsiders" was a period piece set in the late 60s. It's main character Ponyboy has a 'cameo' in "That Was Then...This is Now". Ponyboy is still a teenager at this time, so not much time has passed since the events of "The Outsiders". By the end of the end of "TWT...TiN", Mark Jennings is an inmate. In "Tex", Mark is a prison escapee. He is the hitchhiker Tex & Mason pick up. Age-wise Mark is in his mid to late 20s. ALSO, Cathy Carlson from "TWT...TiN" is a teacher at Tex's school now.

THEREFORE: The story of "Tex" takes place in the mid-to-late 70s.
Couple that with the fact the novel first saw print in 1979.

As far as the movie is concerned, a direct timeline &/or continuity is subjective.

Yeah if I saw it right, the application form to Indiana said 1977-78 on it.

Actually, I looked closely on the Indiana acceptance letter and in one sentence, it said March 1, 1981 so it may be set in late 1980 or early 1981
