So retarded to cast a 30 year old (who certainly LOOKED IT) to play 18

actually "almost 18".

From the first scene of the older brother I was like "wait, he's a HIGH SCHOOLER" ?

For 'Tex', I know that Mason McCormick was suppose to be @ 18, while the actor playing him was closer to 30 at the time. The actor Jim Metzler was good in his role, so I didn't mind too much.

It's very common to cast older people as younger characters in Hollywood:

- Michael J. Fox was close to 30 when he was playing 17 year old Marty McFly in 'Back to the Future Part II' & '...Part III'.

- Alan Ruck was around 30 years old when he played high schooler Cameron Frye in 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off'.

- Actor Tom Welling, of TV's 'Smallville' will turn 30 later this month (April 2007). His 'Smallville' character, Clark Kent, is @ 19/20. Ironically, Christopher Reeve was 25 years old when he played Superman/Clark Kent, who was suppose to @ 30, in 'Superman' (1978).

The most glaring example of high school kids played by people near or over 30 would be the cast of the 'Porky's' movies or the film 'Grease'! Very obvious!

I would say that the trend of having younger actors play characters closer to their age has been improving in recent years . . .

Check out some of the old movies from the 40's to 60's. Some of the "high school kids" look ancient! Try Flubber. Not the main characters, but some of the team. It was ridiculous!

Yes that spoilt it a bit for me. I won't say he looked 30 but he certainly didn't look 18.
I think they should have changed it to Dillon being 17 which was his actually age and his brother maybe 25 and it would have been more believable. Otherwise not a bad film.
