Cassavetes and Sarandon as a couple

I'd have to search far and wide to find a screen couple with less chemistry than John Cassavetes and Susan Sarandon. What she saw in him was never clear to me – and what she got was never worth the effort. And he seemed to find her more irritating than charming.

This is a beautiful film, but it strains credibility to the max. It's like "The Blue Lagoon" with grown-ups.

I always felt the two were attracted to each other because they each promised a kind of novelty -- never a solid foundation for a relationship. And by the end of the film they do seem to be pretty tired of each other, because novelty eventually wears off. But initially, I can see how they would find the other attractive.

There, daddy, do I get a gold star?

Might be that having his real-life wife, Gena Rowland, on set with him didn't help!? I'd be scared to peek at Susan or Molly or anyone with that woman glaring at me!

I really, really, enjoyed the film, when it first came out, and just ordered the DVD release through Amazon.

That's a little harsh. I'd gladly pick Gena over John any day, but that's just me. And I'd also pick Gena over Susan Sarandon.

well he was supposed to be having a mental breakdown, i doubt there would be much room for establishing chemistry

and Rowlands is hotter than Sarandon any day of the week, esp since Rowlands was about 30 years older than Sarandon in this film

Yes, he's having a mental breakdown, yet somehow he is irresistible to Susan Sarandon. Oh well, I guess the pickin's were slim.
