That's a good question. I saw the film a couple times on HBO, and thought it was pretty good.

reply

I am so pleased to see this film referred to as a "masterpiece." For years, I was convinced I was the only person on the planet who had even seen it and I am so thrilled to learn there are others who appreciate it the way I do.

You can get the DVD on ebay for $15.

reply

Nope, you can't. This is actually one of the few movies I would consider buying a bootleg of - just until the real release came out, of course - but there doesn't seem to be any.

reply

It is currently available from the seller wackysmacko. It is $9.99 with $4.25 shipping. Just search - Tempest DVD - and pick the 1982 version. Let the board know if the quality is decent, if you decide to buy, please.

This is one movie I have watched repeatedly since I was a kid and since then have been mesmerized with Greece. Great script and a fine cast of actors. I love the Greek symbolism/Shakesperean characters depicted (or perhaps loosely based) in this modern day story "Kalibanos" as Pan/Caliban - crazy isolated guy with clarinet; "Philip" - Zeus/Prospero; Aretha - Aphrodite/Ariel? Also "Trinc" - Trinculo?
Tempest is a treasure. I also think of it strangely "chic" in a way, perhaps it came from an era just before many movies from the 80's became shoddy..in my opinion.
And Kalibanos' character is simply unforgettable.
Philip "don't call me Boss"
Kalibanos "okay b- i no call you Boss"

I appologize, sms8634. I spoke too soon and you're right. There is a bootleg available on eBay, just like you said. If I decide to check it out, I'll definitely let the board know the verdict.

reply

ok, I've recieved the DVD! I won't tell you what it cost (too embarrassed), but I will tell you that you must really LOVE this movie to be able to stand the quality of this poor bootleg. It's in FoolFrame (regular TV-format), it's grainy lika a VHS but probably hand-scanned from a seat in a second-rate theatre. The audio quality is acceptable at best. Menu works ok, no subtitles, no audio options. Bonus materials? Hahahahaha!!! Dream on. Well, fortunately, I do love this movie enough to be able to enjoy it despite all this, but I'm REEEALLY looking forward to a decent, legal release of it. Please, Sony Pictures, give us a break!

Where do you all live???

I live in Region 4, but we have in specialty stalls, DVDs imported foreign. And I found a copy of "Tempest" with Susan S at the theatre today for $26 AU.

It's in region 1, i.e. America.

I bought it during the intermission of watching LIV ULLMANN's A Streetcar Named Desire with Cate Blanchett. It was an ok production, the acting was too uneven... i.e. the acting of the various actors were too disparate for the production to work. Cate was good, but the others brought her down unfortunately. Especially Stella. Anyhow sorry to get off the topic

But Can anyone confirm that this DVD is 2 buy in America?????

reply

I just bought it, brand new, through Amazon.com for under $10US plus shipping.

reply

It's available on dvd via Netflix.

reply

It's commercially available now in glorious widescreen!

reply

that is great! i will buy one straight away...
