Johanna makes me CRINGE!!!!!!

Seriously, she makes me cringe in fear when she tries to to hit the high notes. The movie Johanna was much better IMO, this Johanna nearly ruined the whole thing.

I thought Bety was hilarious in Kiss Me, but you´re right, her Green Finch is a pain to my ears, Jane wisener did it much better. It is unintentionally hilarious, though, if you watch it muted, just for her facial expressions^^

God I am glad I'm not the only one who thinks so.

She really was shockingly bad. And she was married to George Hearn, who played Sweeney... Anyone smell nepotism?

Donna: You just want to mate?
Dr: I just want A mate!
Donna: You're not matin' wi’me Sunshine!

reply

To make things even MORE hilarious....they divorced in 1984. About two years after this production.

George was probably saying to her: "And...I married you because......"

It was an embarrassing moment, for sure.

It seemed to be a filmed performance in front of a live audience. But I didn't understand why they didn't do a better take, especially, of "Green Finch and Linnet Bird". (Unless she really couldn't do any better? I noticed she had pitch problems quite frequently, all through the show.)

What a pity.

You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.

whats really fun is watching her eyes cross on the high notes! (seriously, they do!)

reply

Too much shrill trilling and incessant vibrato.
I want to stifle her... and her warble

I heard she was told to act comical, so it may not have been her fault.

reply

If she was told to act comical, I could understand the facial expressions. That character doesn't seem to be a very comical character though, so it would be odd. I do agree with her voice, I think Jayne did a much better job.

I'm not finished!
Oh yes you are Captain... I mean Fraulein.

reply

Yeah...it doesn't make sense for a character like Johanna to be comical, so I don't understand what this director was thinking when he had her do it.

I saw this very same production live at the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion back when I was in high school. It was the "road company" of the original Broadway incarnation. I saw the same exact cast live.

Betsy Joslyn, it must be noted, was in the original Broadway cast, as a chorus member who understudied the role of Johanna. This was before George Hearn's involvement. At this point, she actually had a longer history with the show than HE did.

That stated, I agree she's badly out of tune in this televised version. Live, on stage, I do not recall this at all. Her performance "worked," as did the entire show of course. I have this strange feeling she was "trying too hard" for the camera. That sort of thing works on stage, but on film/video it can be too much.

Her singing on "Green Finch and Linnet Bird" is truly awful. But as a character she's delightful. Someone else on this thread said she wasn't a comic character but, even thought she's sympathetic, she's also remarkably funny. She's a sixteen-year-old girl who falls in love instantly with Antony but obsesses over her reticule. When she first lets him into her room she thinks she hears Judge Turpin coming through the gate even though "we don't have a gate". She's dotty and besotted, and one gets the feeling that the two of them go a little too far on the couch because all of a sudden it becomes even more important that they get married on Sunday, married on Sunday. And, ultimately, she's the one with enough killer instinct to do away with Fogg. It's an adorably goofy character; it's just a shame that the actress over-sings the role.
