How old is Toby?

I've watched this version and the Tim Burton film and both Toby's look different....(age wise)

Can someone explain?

reply

Well in the broadway show he's a retarded adult, in the movie he's a kid. I don't know the exact ages, but that's the difference. I like him as a kid, actually. The first time I saw this version I actually thought it was supposed to be a kid, and it was just played by an adult for convenience. But a retarded adult works too.

Thanks!

I didn't realize he was supposed to be "retarded." I just thought with as large of a role that Toby is within the show, it was easier to cast an adult.

The fact that he's a boy in the Tim Burton film reminds you a little of Dickens, and I'm sure that was intentional. In the movie he's like a combination of Oliver Twist and the Artful Dodger.

In the stage version he is NOT meant to be a retarded boy/man .

If you may or may not notice , when Lovett and toby sing " not while im around" , she says " oh what a sweet CHILD it is".

also with the story/genre and goryness of the play and the year and time it was done , a child wouldnt have been allowed to play the part. even now , a child is not legally allowed on a stage much after 9 o'clock at night.

so really it is a boy (what the part is meant to be), they couldnt have had a child play the part.
i think Jennings plays the part very well , as they all do.

Um, it's a retarded adult in the broadway version. He's supposed to be autistic and needy, and with a lot of autistic people, as with some people who have cerebral palsy, their minds never mature past the ages between 8 and 12. She calls him a child in Not While I'm Around because in his mind he's a child.

Dear me! What is that unpleasant aroma? I fear the sewer may have backed up during the night.

This is from an interview with Ken Jennings (the original stage Toby) in 1998:

"How old was Tobias, as you played him?

Tobias, we're talking about fifteen. Maybe even seventeen. Because of his mental difficulties he was probably, he might have been seven really in terms of emotional and mental maturity. Truly a child."

Personally, I don't believe he's meant to be "retarded", like actually having Down Syndrome. He just has the mental compacity of a child; probably not being schooled and constantly being abused didn't help matters either. In the stage show Toby is always being referred to by the other characters as "the Boy, or the Lad", simply because he is younger in age than them. It's not just because of his mental state. For instance, in the cast recording Pirelli yells to Toby , "You! Boy! Get on that chair!" or Mrs. Lovett says "Oh that's just my boy - the lad that helps me with the pies." Toby is not a child, but he's also NOT an adult like Pirelli, Lovett, or Todd is age wise.

The whole interview is here if anyone's interested in reading it:

I think he's more of like an adolescent if you will.. But it doesn't make sense, if he has the mental compacity of a child can he still be an apprentice to a Barber?

"He's supposed to be autistic and needy, and with a lot of autistic people, as with some people who have cerebral palsy, their minds never mature past the ages between 8 and 12."

The above ranks as one of the most ignorant, unpleasant and fundamentally inaccurate statements I've ever read on IMDb.

I don't think that it is really known as to how old Toby is supposed to be, Ed Sanders that played Toby for the film version was born in 1993, that is listed on his page here. Kenneth Jennings that played Toby in this version his birthday date, or year is not mentioned on his page. In the film version yes he does look more like of a child, but still that part is not to be known, he is not asked how old he is, and not to sure if he know how old he is. But in either production, Sweeney Todd tells Toby to tell Mrs. Lovett to give him a big tub of gin. And at the time the story is taking place, I don't know if London has rules of how old somebody has to be to drink drinks like gin. So all I can really say is that your guess is as good as mine.

He's supposed to be 10 years old. But they cast an older guy to play him.

I love you, Kristen Stewart. :) You are so beautiful and talented. I would love to perform with you.
