Is this on DVD anywhere? Will it ever be?

Clues needed. Any rumours? Ideas? News? Everything appreciated.

By the way, is it on DVD in Spain? Without English subtitles supposedly?

reply

The movie is on DVD in Spain -- I am watching it over there right now as part of one of my classes while studying abroad. As far as I know, the DVD is readily available in Spain, but does not include any subtitles (at least the version that I have).

One important note on it though -- the movie looks every bit from 1983 -- the DVD does not lend any digital quality. I suppose this is due to a bad original, but watching the DVD is the same as watching a semi-worn out filmstrip or videotape.

I hope this helps.

Since the Criterion Collection released Erice's "The Spirit of the Beehive" last year, there is hope that they'll look into his other works, namely this film. I have not seen it yet, however the stills that I have seen look incredible. I would advise everyone who would like to see this film in the U.S. to visit criterionco.com and hit title suggestions under the "ask jon mulvaney" section. Also visit criterionforum.com to see if it is in the rumored titles section. Here's hoping for a DVD release!

I found it on eBay. But no subtitles!

It's impossible to find English subtitles. Some websites have .sbt subtitle files, but they're all in French. If anyone knows where to find subtitles, let us know please.

Criterion just confirmed that they're working on this title on their Facebook page.

cinemaodyssey, any word on the release date ?

reply

No, Criterion announces new titles on the middle Thursday/Friday of every month. They've announced through next January with no news of El Sur. I would expect it to probably be a late 2011 to early 2012 release, God willing. No one wants to see this movie more than me!

I've bought from the guy, and the service is very reliable. The copy I bought is good, with English subtitle. Of course, no extras or anything, but well worth the price, until something else comes out.

Thank you for the link! I must add, also, that if you search on eBay, the title is also available from this place in Australia, reliable source - having purchased from them before. The interesting thing was that, it said it was zone two - so was not a problem, since I have a zone free DVD - however, when it came was the zone I can play on my regular DVD in the USA. It has English subtitles.

Am now sitting to watch a very clean, EST copy I got for $5.25 from a very reliable seller on Ioffer. It is a "legal" print, sometimes the only way to view rare titles.

Spanish Blu-Ray/DVD combo with English subs with this film and Spirit is on the way...
