Sweet and old fashioned pic about a menage a trois

I say sweet because it depicts a 3-way relationship that's actually about trust and a deep emotional connection between the people involved. These days we've become so cynical that any depiction of a 3-some tends to be about being dirty, kinky and manipulative. The current depictions of 3-somes that I can come up with in mainstream media off the top of my head are "Wild Things," "Tilt" (EPSN's poker drama from a few years back) & "American Pie: The Naked Mile." The first two were sleazy encounters with people trying to double cross each other and the third was turned down by the hero because it wasn't romantic. You never see the idea that some folks could all be happy in such a relationship in the mainstream media. Even Showtime's program "Big Love" is about a crazy religious group, not simply a polyamerous group.

I say old fashioned because it doesn't seem to be a true menage a trois; the girls are close friends but it seems that they are both his girlfriends. Never once do we see the girls kiss or get the idea that the two of them have a sexual attraction to each other. Ironically a 3-some scene these days (bad and sleazy as they are portrayed) would have to feature at least the girls kissing and feeling each other up. Roger Ebert's review of this film shows a perfect example of the times this film came out of when he says:

I say menage a trois cautiously, since this one doesn't fit the textbook definition: Both of the women become the man's lovers, but they do not have a relationship with one another. There are a few things that the beach party genre is not yet quite ready for.

I agree...and it was tastefully done.

The strong and almost immediate emotional bond between Cathy and Lina was intriguing. An idyllic-like situation of 3 young lovers on a beautiful island far away from reality. It was sweet...nothing more, nothing less. This movie is a dream.

Lina's line "jealousy doesn't show how much you love someone, it just shows how insecure you are" defines it all.

There's a good-natured quality to the movie that's impossible to either resist or dislike. The threeway relationship is handled with surprising taste and sensitivity by writer/director Randal Kleiser, which is exactly why this film is so sweet and engaging.

Couldn't disagree more. while the scenery and premise are both great, the poor writing, editing, directing, music selection, and acting (as well as the overall cheesiness) killed this film.

I like it for what it could have been -- didn't like it for what it was.

This film deserves a mature re-make

Overall cheesiness?

How would you change this film? Please give me some specifics.

According to Wikipedia, they originally intended to display scenes of lesbian sex between the two girls. Unfortunately the studios chickened out and they were removed from the script. I agree with what one poster said I wish they could remake this now. I think modern sensibilities could handle seeing a true menage a trois.

reply

A true menage a trois is merely three people in a relationship, there's not necessarily a bisexual aspect. In fact, I think the story is more interesting because the ladies DON'T hook up.

reply

Yeah, the sex scenes were very sweet and void of raunch or titillation. They definitely weren't 'threesomes' by the standard definition. Aside from no sexual contact between the two females, there never was really any sex scene that involved all three of them. Yes, maybe they were all in bed at once, but one of the girls was usually sleeping while he and the other girl got it on.

This is Dorsia?

The one thing this movie seriously lacked was a sensual love scene between the two girls!

Without it, it's simply a cheap B-movie hardly worth watching a second time. In fact, it was on one of the cable channels just last night, and there's a moment where both girls are sunning nude near the seaside, and Lina rubs some lotion on Cathy's shoulders.

But knowing already that that was as hot as it was going to get, I immediately switched channels and didn't even bother watching the rest.

Yeah what a wasted opportunity. Tsk tsk

This movie was bad. It was good twenty five years ago but now, wretched.

I think in South America they re-named it "Una Almohada para Tres", or "One Pillow for Three". I found it on netflix and watched it. I not only liked it but I also got sunburn! :D

A cheesy classic indeed.

i couldn't agree with you more! I was just watching this movie with my Dad and I even brought up Wild Things as a putrid depiction of MFF sex. This was definitely done very tasteful.

I couldn't hear my own footsteps. It was the walk of a dead man.

The studio was just looking out for their equipment. If Valerie and Daryl had sexy scenes together, the lenses would have melted off the camera!

well said director. there is a certain something about these old movies. they are like indie movies. I grew up in the mid 70's as a teen and used to stay up late late and showtime, the original cable channel, used to show classic old european movies that were just like summer lovers. that's how I first saw the classic "swept away" and used to see those very risque for the times movies like the Emmanuelle movies, and lady chatterly's lover or some of those british sexploitation movies like "Au Pair girls" Imagine my shock as a 15 year old in 1975! wow, nudity on tv! I was stunned.

summer lovers was sort of the end of this era. it's very 70's even though made in the early 80's. I miss this era.

reply

Ah, yes, Summer Lovers, what an old-fashioned movie!

In fact, it's practically interchangeable with all those full-frontal nude beach movies that Cary Grant and Myrna Loy and Clark Gable and Barbara Stanwyck starred in back in the thirties.

I look at it as: Michael is supposed to be the luckiest bastard on Earth as Cathy and Lina are apparently competing for him, rather than Michael and Cathy sharing Lina.
