Box cutter

When Sam is trying to piece together the newspaper article in Brooke's office, it shows somebody cut a knife or box cutter that's hanging from a rope or something. I'd assume it was Brooke since she was on her way to her office, but I can't figure out a reason why she would have it in the first place. She was not the killer. Im assuming since Gayle was the killer, it would have to have been Her, but she was down stairs at the auction the whole
time. Any ideas???

By the time the auction gets to selling the Jackson Pollock, Gayle is no longer at the front of the stage. That is, Gayle is unaccounted for a full 1m 30s of screen time before Brook even notices that Sam & her keys are both gone. It's another minute or so before Brook is able to get free. In sum, Gayle, who's already supposedly stalking Sam, has a couple of minutes head-start on Brook to be in place to grab the boxcutter before Brook makes it up-stairs. There's lots wrong with SotN but this bit of plot mechanics is fine!
