Why didn't Kirk destroy the Reliant instead of trying to escape?

Was it simply because the movie needed to end in a way that killed Spock?

David Marcus tells Kirk that once the Genesis device starts the detonation process there is no way to stop it. So if Kirk tried to stop it by destroying it the energy released will still have taken out the Enterprise.
