Kirk's words for Spock's funeral...

On the surface they seem inspired and moving but weren't they really an insult? Spock always looked down on his human side and always criticized the humans for their lack of logic and emotional ways. He always took any comments from Kirk that he was acting human as an insult.

"His (soul) was the most human" That's kind of an insult.

Yes.

Have you ever seen him in The Brothers Karamazov? It makes you wonder what the heck happened that he turned into such a lousy actor!

Obviously, Kirk meant no insult, it was more like “he was such a good person that he represented the best of humanity even though he was half-Vulcan.”

You do make a good point. Frankly, I think Spock would agree with you! I wonder if he got to watch a video of his own funeral?

reply

Yes. Kirk meant it as a compliment. I just know, based on how Spock was portrayed over the years, he wouldn't take it as a compliment but probably as an insult so it is curious that is what the Kirk character would use. I suppose we can rationalize it that since he knew Spock wasn't there to be insulted he could word it the way he knew others would understand it as an endearing compliment.

I felt the same way.

But there are all kinds of contradictions in this movie. That's just one of them.
