Do I need to see the first one (the motion picture) first?

So I know next to nothing about Star Trek except for the recent movies but I'm hearing good things about Wrath of Khan and want to check it out. I was just wondering if you need to see the first one first to understand it (I hear less good things about that one)?

No, The Wrath of Khan is a pretty well self-contained movie. It is based on an episode of the original series, but enough is covered in the film so that you can understand it.

The 'Kirk's space-pod' and 'Enterprise leaving moorings' scenes in WRATH OF KHAN are footage from THE MOTION PICTURE. Some of Kirk's situation in MOTION PICTURE bears a connection to his major storyline in KHAN.

There is the Original Series episode "Space Seed" which introduces Khan.

I love The Motion Picture, but nothing there is required viewing in order to understand Star Trek II.

No,

WoK is the start of a three film arc, But it is also a stand alone movie.

It look like it was made in the early 80's now, but IMO it is the best of all the Trek films, including new Abrams ones.

As much as I don't care for STV but even I would rather sit through that again than endure another Abrams Trek movie.

Trek V has its moments. The friendship between Kirk and Spock and McCoy really anchors the film, Sybok is a very interesting character, and DeForest Kelley's performance during the scene about his pain is amazing. I even love that giddy feeling of entering the Great Barrier. Set to Goldsmith's beautiful score, the scene really evokes a sense of the unknown and what awaits everyone. Sadly, it all goes down hill again after that! 

The scene after Spock saves Kirk's life still cracks me up. One of Spock's funniest lines:
