Superman Returns rips this movie off big time

Lex = Khan
Clark/Superman = Kirk/Spock
Lois = Carol
Jason = David
Genesis = Kryptonian world building crystals

rips the dead-beat Dad story, you jailed me I want revenge, building a new world out of an old one and sacrifice for the world/enterprise right out of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.

Kirk was Clark IMO and Spock is Superman.

I didnt care for Superman Returns but umm Grasping at straws aren't you?

reply

IMO no. I had just seen both and it's obvious. Plus, Singer is not only a Trekkie, but said he was "going all Wrath of Khan in the sequel" meaning SR's sequel. Revealing he already had.

It's not as though that makes it an outright rip off. It's still original characters, dialog and scenes. It just sucks. I think the world building crystals were too much like genesis though. It gave him Lex's plot and the climax of the film. Calling it rip off may be a bit harsh, but it owes a lot to this film, no question. No wonder Tarantino liked SR so much.

The crystals are from the first two Superman movies which came out before the Wrath of Khan.

reply

It's the world building on top of an old world ability they contained that is the ripoff. There's nothing special about a crystal.

reply

That's what the green crystal was used for in the first Superman movie. Clark threw it into the ice and it created the fortress. Lex did the same thing in Superman Returns but also encased it inside a kryptonite shell in order to create a larger kryptonite-infused fortress.

reply

That created the FoS, yes, but is there anything in STM that even implies, let alone state, that an entire new world can be created?

reply

Well, its not like any other Star Trek films ripped off TWOK.

That is nothing.

X-Men II:

-Villian from the past with a grudge and desire for power
-Mind control, linked to "dead" loved one of villain
-Countdown at the end, that could potentially kill everyone
-Second in command sacrifices self to save the rest
-Second in command WILL be back
-We see representation of second in command in aftermath, during which the second in command repeats the classical opening narration of the leader
-Even the political fallout of the battle, for which they're blamed

NONE of these facts are in dispute, Mr. President!

Singer is definitely a Wrath of Khan fanboy.

No. The movie that rips this off is X-Men 2.

Khan comes back for revenge on Kirk for leaving him stranded on Ceti Alpha V, resulting in the death of his wife.
Striker comes back for revenge on Xavier for failing to rehabilitate his son, resulting in the death of his wife.

Khan gains control of a devastating super weapon that could destroy a planet.
Striker gains control of a devastating super weapon that could kill all mutants.

Chekov is brainwashed by Khan into turning against his Kirk.
Cyclops is brainwashed by Striker into turning against Jean.

Spock sacrifices himself to save the Enterprise crew.
Jean sacrifices herself to save the X-Men.

The dead character delivers the final monologue, previously delivered by the Captain Kirk in the original series: "Space...the final frontier. These are the continuing voyages of the Starship Enterprise. Her ongoing mission: to explore strange new worlds. To seek out new life forms, and new civilizations. To boldly go where no man has gone before"

The dead character delivers the final monologue, previously delivered by Professor Xavior in the original film: "Mutation... it is the key to our evolution. It is how we have evolved from a single-celled organism into the dominant species on the planet. This process is slow, and normally taking thousands and thousands of years. But every few hundred millennia, evolution leaps forward."

The final scene we see in Star Trek II is that of Spock's coffin, suggesting that he'll return in the next movie.
The final scene we see in X2 is that of Jean's "Phoenix aura", suggesting that she'll return in the next film.

I think you're analysis is flawed at best, down right insane at worst.

No it's not your mistaken, now if you'll excuse me.

Can't, I'm afraid. Matinee of Le Miz. Christ, I'll call you.
