Did anyone feel sorry for Khan?

Did anyone feel sorry for Khan? I mean, Kirk and Starfleet never did check up on him. Through no fault of his own the planet he was exiled to was ruined just six months after Kirk left him there. And he suffered in that Hell for 14 and a half years without anyone coming by to see how he was doing. Who could blame Khan for going insane with anger? I thought Kirk and the Federation believed in the humane treatment of prisoners.

I sure did, especially since his wife died too... the man was a dangerous tyrant but he was not given a "fair chance" since they never checked on their progress, as Khan even reminded Chekov.

I forgot about his wife. She probably would've lived if Kirk or some other Starfleet captain checked up on them and brought them to a new planet to live on.

Yes, so he may be evil, but very much like the character he's quoting constantly, Captain Ahab. And there is a definite Paradise Lost influence too, of course, both intended.

Kirk and Starfleet checking up on them was never part of the deal. When Khan made the choice of living on Ceti Alpha 5 over facing prosecution for his crimes it was sink or swim. He basically said as much to his wife at the end of Space Seed. Than Spock remarks how it would interesting to return to that planet in 100 years and see what became of Khan's civilization. That heavily implies that they won't be going back.

I'm not sure why Khan would expect anything more. The guy tried to kill Kirk and take over his ship. And after that he expected Kirk to coddle and babysit him while he's on "his" own planet. If I were Kirk I never would've given him the choice to begin with. I'd have thrown his ass in prison so he could quote Milton to the inmates.

reply

Well then it would have been better for Khan and co to be thrown in prison.

So the taxpayers could pay for him! :)

reply

Wrong! Hopefully by the twenty-third century, taxes will be abolished.

I agree wholeheartedly. He tried to screw Kirk over in the episode Space Seed. He's lucky Kirk didn't throw him out the airlock or even in a Federation prison. Also, in Space Seed he was given the choice of going to Federation Prison or Ceti Alpha V, which Kirk did say was just habitable. Khan quoted Milton "It is better to rule in hell than serve in heaven." Mostly, however, he's lucky he's not in Federation prison for life.

reply

Khan needed to be checked up on? That would have been an insult to his "superior" intelligence. From the time they put the old Earthlings on the planet, they were going to live or die on their own terms, "a world to rule over". Spock himself raised the question of what their attempt would look like in 100 years: "It would be interesting, Captain, to return to that world in 100 years and learn what crop had sprung from the seed you planted today." Khan was just being Khan, "He was the best of the tyrants and the most dangerous. They were supermen in a sense. Stronger, braver, certainly more ambitious, more daring.", and looking for an excuse to finish what he started.

Khan and his followers were selected for extinction, and only that idiot Chekov's inability to distinguish several dozen people from pre-animate matter gave Khan a temporary reprieve.

I re-watched today and thought Chekov was an idiot when he figured where he was and wanted to go outside rthaer than beam up from the shelter.

reply

Yeah, I did feel sorry for him. Khan lost his beloved wife and some of his crew. Also, his planet turned into a desert.

Yeah, can't have been easy losing his wife and crew.

After reading the Reign in Hell book, I can understand why Khan wanted revenge.

I honestly did feel bad for Khan.
And I also felt bad for Khan in Into Darkness as well.

But I guess these films need antagonists.

The more interesting question is what would have happened if the world hadn't been devastated.

I didn't. The man annihilated untold millions on Earth during his conquest of it, and got a bargain in being allowed to live.

I never felt bad for Khan. Maybey I felt bad for his wife Marla McGivers for having to die withat Ceti Eeel in her brain. But I never felt bad for Khan.

Though you have to wonder if a Federation prison could even hold Khan. It would have to be triple maxium security. Maybey Kirk felt dumping Khan on a planet and fending for himself was saving everyone a whole lot of trouble.

reply

I shed not one tear for McGihvers. She wimped out and mutineed against her own captain and crew.

As for Khan...well, Karma.
