It's the definitive version of The Wrath of Khan, it got a new remaster and a new bonus featurette and ported over all of the bonus features from the previous bluray and dvds.
Definitely worth getting because it comes with both the theatrical and director's cut, just make sure you get one with a gold upc label on the back which fixed the short editing error in the beginning with Sulu. Discs with the white upc label have the error and can be exchanged through Paramount.
After watching the original home-video release version for 30 years, then seeing the added footage restored for the blu-ray release, I have to say I prefer the original. I see why the Peter Preston story was trimmed, as it did nothing to really further the plot and it bogged the film down. Also, while it did give Scotty more screen time, these scenes were a little melodramatic.
The novelization of the film went into a great deal of detail about Preston and Scotty's relationship but how it was portrayed in the restored cut scenes left something to be desired, IMHO.
Oh yeah. I know what you mean, I am the same way. I think maybe after watching the same takes from the theatrical version, I may be a bit jaded in my perception of the alternate takes that were used in the extended scenes in engineering. I will say that the extended cut makes a little more sense of Scotty's taking the mortally wounded Preston up to the bridge instead of sickbay.
I don't know so I won't speak to that. However, I will get it because I want to extras. Specifically the behind the scenes stories. For example, how after test screening they shot an additional screen for $100,000 to tack onto the end to give the audience hope about the future of the Spock character.

For me, the Directors Cut of The Wrath of Khan clears up one thing that always annoyed me.
Scotty's reaction to the dead cadet. Scotty had been in combat situations many times, and seen plenty of death, so I couldn't figure out why he felt the need to bring the body of a dead crewman to the bridge. The DC explains that we, and Kirk, know this is his nephew, which makes the reaction more reasonable.

Heh.. I watched this last night and the reason I came to this board today was to see if anyone made that point. Why on earth would Scotty bring the body to the freaking bridge? So much wrong with that, not to mention that Scott was no Dr. and perhaps the boy could have been revived/saved in Sickbay..
As has been mentioned, it clears up the Scott/Preston connection. Sadly the scene is not good. Wonky bit of writing with Preston Saying the Admiral Kirk is "as blind as a hjjkhfd Bat if he can't see how good this engine room is." It is an embarrassing aside that was better left out. The DC also has a line in Sickbay where Kirk answers Scott's plea of "WHY?" It is an awkward reply from Kirk and was wise to cut it.
I don't recall other deleted scenes. The DC is a bit choppy from some extra footage that didn't get blended in in edit. Like an extended combat reaction scene on the Reliant bridge.
