last effort to get Trek II to 7.8

7.7 is too low for this classic

if you haven't already vote it 10 so that it might get to 7.8 so its at least equal to Into Darkness (cant believe im saying that)

imdb scores:

ST09 - 8.0
STID - 7.8
II - 7.7
FC - 7.6
IV - 7.3
VI - 7.2
STB - 7.1
III - 6.6
GEN - 6.6
TMP - 6.4
INS - 6.4
NEM - 6.4
V - 5.4

reply

It's still at 7.7. Let's try this again!

reply

Have any of the rest upped or downed? Lets see

Checking..

New scores

STID 7.7 (at least now its not ridiculously above the original Trek II)
III 6.7

reply

i can not believe TWOK is still at 7.7! smh

looking at the other movies scores now for any changes since OP:

ST09 - 7.9
BEY - 7.0
V - 5.5

reply

The average is now 7.7 with 116383 votes. If it was unweighted average, there would need to be at most 5173 new 10 votes to raise the average to 7.8. But because it's calculated by a secret weighting formula, who knows how many votes it takes.

reply

Now THAT'S a true Star Trek fan🙂.

Well done.

I just got curious about this as a math problem. If the actual average is 7.749999 it rounds down to 7.7 and it takes just one vote to raise it to 7.750000 which rounds up to 7.8. If the actual average is 7.650000 it rounds up to 7.7 and it takes 5173 votes to raise it to 7.750000.

reply

Pretty sure less than 100 people read this thread and most did not raise their vote.
I just noticed I never rated this! Here's a 2* just to shit on your parade.

reply

meh whatever. the OP was done in the old imdb forum days anyway

reply

Easily the best film, no question. 9/10 for me.

Unfortunately Gen X and the Boomer generation that loved this film is fading out....dead men/women don't vote.

Newer generations just can't get around special effects they see as dated. The director isn't one of the Masters, so there is little chance to bring it up to the level it deserves.

if you look at 80s SF movies that are abit comparable like Empire, Blade Runner, The Thing, Terminator, Aliens they're all in the 8s (Empire is 8.7) but maybe thats bc those are still relevant/popular today for the younger generations to check out (and bar Empire the directors are big names still relevant now).. but the original Trek films arent so much - ok maybe Khan is abit as its has 'classic' status (classic Trek status anyway) , but as a whole the OG Trek is maybe just too old now for todays generations to be interested in/check out.. idk

reply

Good point...some of those early 80's movies had cheesy graphics also.

I think you hit the nail on the head w/ your last statement.

What makes STII great is not just the story, but because we were very familiar with the OG characters of Kirk, Spock and McCoy. The emotional impact of the ending resonates.

Newer generations might be only vaguely familiar with Kirk,Spock and McCoy..or the characters could be completely alien if they never watched the original series...so the ending is sad..but not THAT sad.

reply

the new generation should be familiar with Kirk and Co due to the JJ films.. which *should* have made them curious enough to check out some of the original stuff (a couple of the movies anyway)

however things move fast these days and even the JJ films are (seemingly) a thing of the past now (and beyond the first movie didnt really resonate/impact too much in the modern era of MCU, DC, SW)

however TOS and Kirk Spock Enterprise etc is and has always been the pop culture the same way SW, Bond, Indiana Jones, Dr Who etc - its just a case of rejuvenating the franchise when they go stale/dormant whatever (TOS is about to get another go with the new series Strange New Worlds and maybe the 14th movie)

reply

It is insane that the first two Abrams' films are rated higher.

reply

well ID is now equal to TWOK at 7.7 but yeah ST09 is still ahead now at 7.9

ideally TWOK should be well ahead of the rest like 8.2.. with ST09 about 7.5 (under FC) and ID 7.1 (under VI)

reply

This movie is in my top 5 of all time. Seeing Khan having the same score at Into Darkness is a joke.

Into Darkness should be a 5 tops. I mean, it's just an atrocious script with so much that kinda wrecks the whole Star Trek verse (why need starships when you can transport across the galaxy now, Tribbles = never dying).
