Who saw this in cinemas back in 1982?

Who saw this back in the day? What were your memories - the anticipation of seeing it in the weeks/days before, the actually seeing it and how much a big deal was it where you were back then, the crowds, audience etc and after coming out of the cinema what were your thoughts and in the days/weeks that followed.

i was too young to fully appreciate it but my family took me along and vaguely remember being scared of Khan (but i cant remember what i thought of the brain bugs). also remember thinking the nebula at the end was The Black Hole which id seen recently and that they were going into it LOL. spocks death felt epic like it was really happening. and that he was really dead.

Either before or after seeing it I remember one of my family bought a foldout poster magazine (UK) showing the big logo onesheet surrounded by pics from the film and remember looking at it mesmerised lol

I did and I LOVED-IT!!!

I don't know what's a sig. line? Can't think of one! Can you tell me what one is?

I was five years old and my father took me to see it. Spock's death is what I remember most from it. I also remember getting excited when the Enterprise goes to warp speed at the end and shouting "Hyperspace!"

I was in college at the time. Anticipation leading up to the release was very low key, virtually non-existent among people that I knew. That's how much expectations had been lowered by Star Trek: The Motionless Picture (at the time, that nickname was pretty common among longtime Trek fans). Remember that it's not exactly uncommon for a sequel to be a significant step down from a first movie. If that had happened here, the Trek movie franchise might not have survived to make a third try. I was one of many fans who had a more wait-and-see attitude about II.

That said, once the word of mouth started from the opening weekend, the good vibes just started building. By the time I saw it in the third or fourth weekend (and, to be fair, given when the release fell relative to finals and such, I probably couldn't have seen it much earlier anyway), the crowd was primed for a major ride. The movie delivered. Kirk flipping open the communicator in the Genesis cave and calling Spock ("I don't like to lose") was a huge cheering turning point. Spock's death and funeral were hear-a-pin-drop emotional. Then they finished on a hopeful note for the future, and with the just-deceased Spock doing the ending reading of the mission statement. You came out of the theater spent and exhilarated.

Got to see it while I was staying with my grandparents. My grandfather dropped me off at the mall cinema, then picked me up afterwards. Loved the film. Unlike the first one, it felt like my favorite Trek episodes, with plenty of action to match the sci-fi stuff, not to mention a great villain. The space battle was spectacular and well paced. I also enjoyed the military trappings, as that was something I thought was missing from ST TMP.

Fortunately, Ah keep mah feathers numbered for just such an emergency!

I saw it 82 as well. One memory that really sticks with me is walking up the aisle after the movie and seeing a mid thirties man bawling his eyes out about Spock. When I watch it now, I really see how moving that death was.

I don't have time to jaw with anyone who won't identify himself!

I was in junior high school at the time, I saw it at the old Airport Plaza theater (long since demolished) in Hazlet, New Jersey. I had previously seen The Empire Strikes Back there, two years earlier.

I thought TWOK was okay, but surprisingly dark. And I remember thinking that for a more action-oriented Trek, it could've had a little more action than it did.

The Motion Picture didn't have a lot of action, but it was counter-balanced with a lot of cool things to look at. But, this opinion is coming from a Motion Picture geek.

I was 11 when I saw in the theater and the eels made an impression.

I loved it. So much better than "motion picture", it was the one that got me interested in the old shows. I even liked it better than Empire Strikes Back. I loved Ricardos acting & loved the way the ships hunted each other in the nebula like WWII submarines. I was 12 when I saw it & still remember it

I saw it in '82. Please read my post entitled "Battle Damage To The Enterprise".

That object you're tracking isn't a large asteroid. It's a very large spacecraft.

I was 8 and had grown up with Star Trek in syndication and weekend/holiday marathons. I hadn't seen or else didn't remember "Space Seed", hadn't seen TMP, but I flat-out loved it. It was right at the start of Summer and I was Jonesing for a sci-fi fix waiting for Return Of The Jedi the following year.

I also saw it again in cinemas in 1987 as part of a I-IV marathon at a local cinema (I remember seeing the ad for it in a comic store and was like I gotta go to that!) It was great as back then buying films (on vhs) wasn't the norm (too expensive) so really you just had to wait for them to come on tv (and tape them off there if you had a home video recorder - which I didn't). TMP id never even seen on the big screen just once on tv (and tvs wernt that great back then were they) so that was an event in itself. II had seen once in 82 but was way too young to appreciate it, and once or twice on tv a few years later. id seen III twice in 84 and had forgotten most of it so this was almost like seeing it for the first time again. and IV had seen a couple of times that year already but that was ok as I couldn't get enough of it
