Worst Moment For....

After Sophie told the unbearably tragic story of having to make her 'choice' and hearing the gut wrenching screams of her little girl, the movie immediately goes into a love making scene between her and Stingo.

Watching Sophie having to choose made me sick to my stomach. I was still trying to get the screams out of that innocent little girl out of my head. The last thing I wanted to see was some passionate love scene.

A scene with Sophie crying and Stingo holding and comforting her would have been much more appropriate. It was just completely out of place.

Does anyone else agree or do think it was ok?

reply

Your right it was inappropriate but I think it was a artistic choice so that you felt how these two people shouldn't be together.

reply

Sex or lovemaking can very much be an escape from grief.
For some people I understand that it may be the last thing on your mind.
But that's kind of the point.
It takes everything else out of your mind.
It's not uncommon...so I thought it made sense.
In no other instance would she have dropped her guard to be that intimate with Stringo. She didn't love him in that way.

reply

Agreed. Stingo was also pretty much a horrible character. He was borderline creepy.

reply

Stingo says it himself, her lovemaking was"a flight from memory and grief, and also a frantic effort to beat back death."

It is jarring for us because of the sequence of this film, and the juxtaposition comes as a bit of a shock.

It is not jarring for Sophie because she is emotionally numb, and the previous sequence happened several years before.

So it helps to try to see things through her eyes.
