Did she fake her fainting in the Radio scene??

for escaping from being caught or was it genuine like in the library??

From her acting on that particular scene,i am going with the former..
it was so out of character..i know..but she suddenly got the sympathy from the Commandant's child and maybe thats what she had intended..

I wondered this for years as well, especially as she glances up when Emmi goes to the window, but in the book she faints for real. It was something to do with her period starting after a long time.

But in the movie it's never clarified so it's open to interpretation :) To me it looks like Meryl is playing it as if it was fake.

I couldn`t quite get what the deal was in that scene in the first place - it sort of seemed she really did entertain the thought of stealing the radio. But what on earth for? What would she do with it, whom would she sell it in a bloody death camp?

Someone from the Resistance asked her to steal it,,so that they could use it for the movement

"I know it's been a year since you've asked this, but she definitely faked it - she opens her eyes when the girl goes to get the bottle from the shelf and then closes them right before she turns around."

I agree completely, she faked the fainting, but it's just interesting that in the book it's genuine. I think it adds more edge that she fakes it, it's an interesting panicked, think-of-something-on-the-spot moment :)

The book is one of those books you'll either love or hate. First time I read it I hated it, second time I loved it :) Hope you enjoy it!

Excellent point. It didn't occur to me then, but it seems very possible now that you mention it. The girl certainly became very nurturing at that point, though Sophie would have no reason to expect that.

I remember thinking "Well, that's convenient" but by the time the scene was over I thought it was obvious she was supposed to have actually fainted. And if she genuinely fainted in the book, it's pretty far fetched the people making the movie would say "Let's change it to her faking it!"

EDIT: I just re-watched the scene. I assume it's just meant to be realistic. Usually in movies when someone faints they're totally unconscious for a while, until they eventually come to or someone does something to bring them out of it. But IRL, fainting can only last a few seconds.

I mean, her eyes are open while the girl is looking right at her and coming towards her, so if she was trying to fool her she did a terrible job.

I think the scene works either way. If the girl tells her father Sophie tried to steal the radio, Sophie's life is over.

So she may have fainted for real or faked it. Either way, she uses it to draw attention away from the radio and towards other things which works.
