was it supposed to be a sad ending?

I felt sad at the end when the boy sees the snowman melted with just a scarf. And then the film suddenly ended. It was just sad. Did it mean the snowman was dead? Or never existed?

He melted, sadly. So yes you could say he died. :(

You should learn something about viewing films from this detail: Yes, the snowman existed. After the discovery, the first thing the boy does is to look at the gift of his scarf.

Most great films deserve a more appreciative audience than they get.

At first he thinks it was a dream, but then he realised he still has the scarf. :(

I think it was making the point that one best enjoy what they have, when they can, for it rarely lasts long.
I've heard that The Snowman makes an appearance in another Christmas film, reappearing ala Frosty the Snowman. But I have not seen that film.

While I know that every tale can't have a happy ending, but I dislike the ending to The Snowman.
Why does every film have to *teach kids a life lesson*??

Its not like children will not experience death or loss in their lives, or not learn that not everything has a happy ending.

Is it so tough to just make a nice, cheerful Christmas tale???

I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus.
Didn't he discover America?
Penfold, shush.

It's about a snowman, how could it have a happy ending? He'll eventually melt.
