the restaurant scene

That scene really seemed out of place.....probably the least effective scene in an otherwise outstanding movie.
Finney and Keaton appeared to play the scene for cheap laughs, with the swearing, etc.....I don't think a couple going through those emotions would have acted that way in a public place.
But maybe I'm wrong.

That scene is my favorite scene in any film. I felt it was appropriate because it shows real human behavior. It showed many emotions. You can experience anger, strain, guilt, unity and humor. It shows strength in marriage. No matter how unhappy they were with their partner, when others attacked, they had a united front.

Well put. The scene was just a bit of light comedy to make us laugh as a prelude to the very disturbing final scene.

In any case, the scene was necessary to show them getting drunk and having fun together (like they used to do). They would not have had sex if not for this scene. If they hadn't had sex, Sherry would not have found them in bed, etc., etc.

The restaurant scene was so over the top as to be comical – or near comical, if it had been funny instead of just cringe-inducing. Honestly, much of this film rang false to me, and I tried my best to appreciate it but the rage and actions of Finney's character seemed to come out of nowhere. But maybe I'm wrong, because others seem to love this film.

This is one of my favorite films. Not quite sure what it is about this film that resonates with me. Maybe because it was in theatres around the time my parents were going through a divorce and my father was a lot like the Albert Finney character.

To me, many of the scenes seem very theatrical....almost like a stage play adapted to film.

- Who knows who wrote that song of summer, that blackbirds sing at dusk?

Theatrical. Perfect way to describe it, almost like a scene out of a musical.

I don’t think chugging a couple bottles of Gewürztraminer is the best way to finish a public argument. Being such a light wine, much better to use with fish or to help someone remember a joke they forgot how to tell.

The scene is memorable and funny (with that relentless singer!), but it did feel contrived and unrealistic to me, and as you said, played for cheap laughs. The film is pretty intense. Maybe they thought we needed a break?

While I thought it pushed it too far, I have had similar arguments/laughing with an ex - it's really painful, but we were also able to see the absurdity of our argument - of our predicament. It seemed like we should be able to fix everything, but we also knew it was impossible. Despite the irreconcilable, there can still be love...
