I can see their breath...?

I just finished watching Shoot the Moon for the first time tonight, I caught the end of it as a kid but never saw the whole movie, however I looked up the movie tonight after watching it and found out the movie was shot in San Francisco, but the scene just before the end, when Faith is taking to George on the tennis court, I noticed I could see their breath.

At first, I thought it was just smoke from the cigarette that Faith was smoking but as I continued to watch, I realized I could also see it when George was talking.

This just seems weird to me, because they were filming in California. I wasn't aware that it got cold enough to see one's breath in that state. I know they may have cool days in San Francisco, but not that cool.

^Northern California can get very cold, especially at night. Just look at how the characters dressed: long sleeves, long pants, leg-warmers, hats, gloves, mittens, scarves. This is not bikini territory.

If you think that's strange, I've seen a couple movies where characters were inside a supposedly well-maintained family home and you could see their breath!

San Francisco gets very cold. I once visited there and had to buy a heavy jean jacket as I didn't know I'd need a coat! It was a beautiful jacket, though, with the SF skyline embroidered on the back. It also had glitter glued on and sprinkled across the city. I had it for many, many years.
