Dana had juvenile diabetes. As I recall, her death was due to coplications from the disease. I always felt that she and Diane Keaton deserved Oscar nominations for this film.

I agree.
I wish they would release this movie on DVD. I remember crying my eyes out---and Keaton and Dana Hill (RIP) were the characters that made me cry.

Diane Keaton singing "If I Fell" in the bath tub and then breaking down is the best acting I've seen from her......(in a dramatic role, that is).

Human Beings...Wow

Did you see Diane in "Looking for Mr. Goodbar," by chance? I thought she was much better there, but that film is more my style than this one.

She seemed very small, like her growth was stunted. Maybe she had the same thing that afflicted Gary Coleman.

I don't know what it was called, but she did have some kind of stunting medical condition.

I agree about Diane Keaton. I think this us her best dramatic turn...even better than "Reds". I am so tired if seeing her in thankless, somewhat whacky upper middle - aged roles (a la "Because I Said So"), when she is capable of SO much more as an actress, dramatically speaking. I thought she was PERFECT in "Baby Boom", "Manhattan", and "Some thing's Gotta Give", among other comedies. But I just love Keaton in "Shoot the Moon", and "Interiors" as well.

This was the best example of child or young adult acting I think I've ever seen on film (Hill was 18 when she filmed this.) Young actors of today, who seem mostly only interested in looking picture-perfect and polished on screen and nothing more, should view Dana Hill in this movie and take a lesson. Seriously amazing. Dana's been gone for a while now, but her talents are still missed.

Just a side note to those interested in more good-quality dramatic films like this one--"Cross Creek" is another film in which Dana Hill appears, and she is just as incredible in that one as this. Definitely worth watching.

She was the best thing in this movie. The scene with Albert Finney at the boardwalk was very sweet.

I appreciate the way she handled this role. She may have been 18 but she looked and acted the younger part. I think she was the center of the film. Diane Keaton seemed to be the mom who would learn to adapt. Finney seemed to be the dad would never learn to adapt - really adapt - until he just got too old to obsess anymore.
Dana Hill showed so much of what was going on in her reactions to her parents.
I read the account of a man going through a divorce once (I think it was just an interview). He said that his daughter was just entering high school and suddenly she was wiser and more sensitive and much more condemning of him during the divorce than his younger kids. This rings true to me.

I know this is an old thread but I just saw this movie and Dana Hill was a real highlight. What a wonderful job she did and who can forget her from European Vacation and other 80's roles. I didn't realize she had passed- Rest in peace.
