One thing I don't understand *SPOILERS*
Why didn't anyone try to stop John Doe 83 from trying to drown himself in the beginning?

In the beginning I don't think the people on the shore realized what he was up to. Most of the people did stop what they were doing but they didn't make any attempt to stop him because they were merely curious and wanted to see what he was doing. It's only when half of his head is submerged under water does a woman start screaming and acknowledging his motive. I assume that someone afterwards must have saved him from drowning. The scene is suspenseful and well shot and I liked how the camera placed itself beneath the water in conjunction with John Doe's submersion to give a horrifying POV.
shareThank you for clarifying that. Rewatching the scene on Youtube, I see what you mean. I noticed nobody accually saw John Doie 83 pick up the stones he put in his jacket. That scene, along with the music, was very horrifying and suspenseful at the same time. And here it is:
