An old question, but one I like

Lets say a new movie were coming out. And laying aside the fact that something this good shouldn't be tainted like that. lets say that some people think it time for an update.

Who to play whom?

by the way: I cannot spell their names...sorry

Percy:
Marguerite:
Chavelin:
Armand:
Andrew:
Tony:

etc.

uuurgh...i just had a nightmare that Keira Knightley played Marguerite...eek...
anyway. what do the rest of you think?

reply

Percy should be played by someone who is attractive but not afraid to make a fool of himself.

Johnny Depp. Johnny Depp should be the Scarlett Pimpernel.

And Orlando Bloom should be Armand.

~What is this thing for anyway?~

reply

Percy: Heath Ledger
Marguerite: Eva Green
Chavelin: James Caviezel
Armand: Henry Cavill
Andrew: Josh Hartnett
Tony: Jonathan Rhys Meyers

reply

I believe they should put the broadway musical to video. That show was absolutely brilliant and so few people were able to see it.

reply

God forbid a remake!

I think James Caviezel should be Armand if that was the choice and not heath ledger. I mean I love Heath but not for the scarlet pimpernel.

You need them to have a slight stature with a fit physique like Anthony Andrews. He isn't overly muscular and neither is Leslie Howard in the other version.

reply

Sir Percy isn't actually a weakling in the books - he's strong, with broad shoulders. It would make a change to have a 'substantial' actor in the role!

"Tony, if you talk that rubbish, I shall be forced to punch your head" - Lord Tony's Wife, Orczy

reply

Yes I know but the audience as well as the characters in the movie are meant to be under the impression that he is not as physically strong as they suppose.

Similar to Wesley in The Princess Bride. He looked strong but not as strong as they thought which is how he bested a giant...That is what I was referring too.

I didn't mean that Sir Percy was a weakling....

reply

I see your point, but Percy has to have some obvious redemptive qualities, or else the audience would be wondering why on earth Marguerite married such a weak character! At least if he's good-looking and strong, there's a superficial appeal not dimmed by his apparent lack of brains. Douglas Sills in the musical version has had the best 'physique' for the role so far, I think - in the other adaptations, Percy gets punier with each actor - Howard, Andrews ... and Grant was the worst of the lot!

"Tony, if you talk that rubbish, I shall be forced to punch your head" - Lord Tony's Wife, Orczy

reply

Yes I agree, Grant and Howard were a unusual choices. However, Howard was good in the role.

Andrews had that secret strength that wasn't thought to be there although I do think Douglas Sills was a very good choice too.

Actually in one of the books after the events of 'The Scarlet Pimpernel' there is a passage describing that the general society is wondering what the hell Marguerite is doing with Percy...I think it is in 'The Elusive Pimpernel'

reply

I just checked on this thread because I just now saw this movie on video and absolutely loved it. I was reading through these posts and felt very sad once again because a lot of people were suggesting Heath ledger. :( Too bad he's not around to enjoy anymore.

reply

To be honest, I think Hugh Jackman would be a very good Sir Percy. I can also see Toby Stephens playing Sir Andrew or Lord Tony. As for Marguerite, I don't know. Jane Seymour was the best! I also think Tom Hollander would be good.

reply

Tom Hollander as Chauvelin I mean.

reply

Toby Stephens...great choice!

reply

I think Christian Bale would be an excellent Percy, and I would like to see him in something a bit more period.

reply

I think Heath Ledger would be a wonderful Percy, he's extremely attractive but doesn't stand out as being particularly strong or masculine.

Marion Cotillard would be the absolute perfect Marguerite; she's so gorgeous and feminine but definately has something burning in her eyes. (plus if they decide to go the musical route she's a proven singer, having sung in a French film whose name I can't remember)

Chavelin...I'm not so sure. I definately think it should be someone old enough to act as a father figure towards Marguerite, but not too old. Early/Mid forties.

I like Brandon Routh as Armand, though I'm not sure if he would be able to pull off a french accent.

reply

I've never heard of Marion before, but I note that she played Edith Piaf in the recent film of her life, which I would like to see. Intriguing choice - like Eva Green, only happy!

I added Heath to my fantasy cast list when I saw him in the wishy-washy Casanova, but I've since relegated him to Sir Andrew

Here's a few pictures of Marion to save you the trouble

reply

I already looked her up She is beautiful, I agree, and I've added 'La Vie en Rose' to my Amazon rental list - would you recommend any more of her films?

Also, I put forward your suggestion to the LiveJournal Scarlet Pimpernel community that I habitually stalk: http://community.livejournal.com/demmed_elusive People seem to be in agreement! Any suggestions for a screen musical Percy or Chauvelin?

reply

LOLLL I just had the most psycho idea.. I was thinking of Brittish actors, of which I knew few

How about good ol' Huh Laurie for CHauvalin.. LOLLL

Probably a ridiculous idea.. but picturing it made me laugh anyway, so, it's all good..

reply

I've always pictured Hugh Laurie as Sir Percy. He might be too old now, but is still Very handsome and has already played several delightfully foppish aristocrats (black adder, anyone?)

reply

Yikes, Hugh Laurie is way too old to be Percy, but would make a great Chauvelin! AS for everyone else, I need time to think about it!

I really like James McAvoy, but I don't think he would be right for this part. Sir Percy is supposed to be a large man, blonde, with blue eyes. Ok, Anthony Andrews doesn't have blue eyes, and Jane Seymour doesn't resemble the description of Marguerite in the book...strawberry blonde with blue eyes, but I think she did a great job.

Have I mentioned Rupert Penry-Jones recently?

The only blonde-haired blue-eyed Marguerite I've seen on screen is Margaret Leighton, and she was terrible. I think having Marguerite as a brunette with dark eyes contrasts well with Sir Percy, and heightens her attraction - Merle Oberon was captivating in the original film.

I'm a fan of Rupert Penry-Jones. Still, I adored Anthony Andrews in the part. Perhaps you are right that "having Marguerite as a brunette with dark eyes contrasts well with Sir Percy."

I only recently read the book before watching it. I had the Richard E. Grant version in a Romance collection. Before watching it, I wanted to read the book. Then I learned about the AA and LH/MO versions. I bought them all.

Actually, the famous story is the third in a long series of novels, escapades and episodes...all re TSP. I am in the process of reading them all. Some are better than others.

dianekistler,

Ohhh, I love your idea of Rupert! He'd be wonderful! I do love the Richard E Grant version though. He has such a charm about him and his smile is captivating!

It’s good to dream

reply

;-) Rupert wasn't my idea....I only replied to the person before me.

I am sorry I didn't give proper credit to where it was due. So whoever mentioned it I like the idea if that counts for anything.

I agree with whoever brought up Marion Cotillard. She would be excellent! Also James McAvoy would be brilliant.

Percy: Tom Mison
Armand: Gaspard Ulliel
Margot: Astrid Berges-Frisbey

I don't want them to make a new movie, though...not until I can direct it!
