Why wasn't Mickey rushed to the hospital?

That would have made the most sense.

reply

Why was Mickey left to die? Because he had an HMO.

reply

Rocky would have covered all of his medical bills.

Mick knew after the Thunderlips match that he was in bad shape. He should've got checked out. If he wasn't so irresponsible, he would've lived. I also thought it was wrong of him to send Rocky out there to fight such a tough match and expect him to have his head together. He lost to Clubber the first time for a lot of reasons, but one of the biggest reasons was Mick not being there and him worrying about Mick. He went in there unfocused and he fought Clubber all wrong. He just wanted to knock Clubber out and get back to Mick. As the OP said, Mick should've been rushed to the hospital right away. Immediately. The fight should've also been postponed. Mick might've lived and Rocky might not have lost to Clubber if things were different. But I guess the point of Rocky III is seeing him down and have to pick up the pieces and come back to show he's still the greatest.

While it certainly didn't help that Mickey was laid out during the match, I think it's safe to assume Rocky would have lost anyway. He wasn't taking his training seriously, he'd lost his edge fighting a bunch of nobodies and had gotten soft. Plus his fighting style was all wrong for an opponent like Clubber. Apollo completely retraining Rocky wasn't just for fun, he was going to have to become a new fighter to win.

That's the funniest thing I've read in awhile...cheers

for dramatic effect! rocky comes in after losing the game and sees what happened to him

I think that Mickey knew the end was coming, and he wanted to see and be with Rocky. Rocky had reached heights in the sport Mickey never did.

As hard-headed as he was, he wouldn't have wanted to spend his last minutes in a cold hospital room. I think he died happy thinking that Rocky had won.

It wasn't in the script

Because a cast member must die in almost every Rocky sequel.

To get Mickey out of the way so Apollo can be his trainer;

Foreshadow Rocky IV: Lang “killed” Mickey by shoving him into a crowd of photographers as I recall, which triggered his heart attack — so Lang killed one of Rocky's closest friends — fast-forward to Rocky IV where it is more obviously about gaining revenge after Drago kills Apollo;

And to actually address the question: for dramatic purposes, Rocky needs to have a final conversation with Mickey (and lie about the result of the Lang fight) before Mickey passes on. In real life, Mickey would get rushed to the hospital, the doctors would do their thing, Mickey would die, and Rocky wouldn't have time to have a final convo.

Things were slower in general until the beginning of the 90s. There weren't cellphones, and processes were just slower in general. Being a boxing match, you would think there is an ambulance on site, but maybe to coordinate everything just took so much time.

Rumor had it at the time (never confirmed) that the film’s script supervisor— who doubled as Stallone’s masseuse — and the film’s editor — who picked up extra change as Sly’s preferred foot massager- both engaged in a night of partying which may or may not included heavy drinking, possible debauchery, and professional manicure/pedicure sessions amongst other alleged lurid activities. Stallone got word of this, wondered why he wasn’t invited and embarrassingly scolded the two suckers in front of cast and crew. After the dressing down in front of laughing colleagues, the two jaded employees sought revenge and messed with the scene in the hope that it would make The Italian Stallion look like an inconsiderate, narcissistic big-timer who couldn’t care less about his sage older mentor in his dying moment. So the scene was shot as we see it in the final product, but Stallone noticed it too late to change it back to a more believable sequence that included an ambulance ride. But because of the power, pull and allure that the Rocky Balboa character possessed over the audience, the plan backfired and the audience loved the locker room crying session from Balboa in the film’s most poignant moment after the fight which of course shows Mickey taking his last breaths of life. Then, Stallone allegedly had the two employees fired; blackballed, the two offenders were then subjected to taking fruitless jobs in the industry, mostly relegated to b-movies and lower budget Pauly Shore flicks.

Again, just rumors….

On a side note, III is probably my favorite sequel, mostly due to , IMHO, having the best and most fun villain in Clubber Lang, the Balboa/Lang rematch and redemption story arc and Apollo Creed’s turn as ally to The Italian Stallion. So, all in all, good times!

Salut!
