I am looking for a movie about this very subject"The Return of Martin Guerre" except it has a different title. It may be a recent release. Can anyone help me.

Maybe you are referring to the american movie Sommersby, with Richard Gere...

That's the ripoff. The law got involved if I recall.

Not as good as the one with the one, the only, the greatest of the great Gérard Depardieu.

Actually the person who was reading the screenplay noticed the similarities and insisted that Warner get the remake rights because it was very obvious that it was a stolen plot. Warner eventually bought the rights to keep a lawsuit at bay. So I don't think the law actually got involved, I think they were just warned that it would.
