Blew my MIND

Just when you think you've got your finger on this movie, a new subtle concept jumps out of it. I disagree entirely with anyone who thinks Fassbinder wasnt aware of its apparent flaws. They were exactly that, TOO APPARENT and obviously intentional. The last minute absolutely blew my mind. The authors obviously intended to make a film to be interpreted repeatedly...I cant wait to see it again.

Although I haven't seen the film, I dare say that your conjecture is correct. Fassbinder was a great believer in the alienation techniques often associated with the plays of Bertolt Brecht. All of his films have what could be considered blatant flaws. Strange editing, stilted dialogue, and odd lighting effects were favorite techniques of Fassbinder to remind the audience that they are watching a movie.

I have to agree with you, the last quarter of this film is really intense, the bond that suddenly develops between the two murderers Querelle and Gil, than querelle's betrayel of his new friend, along with the destruction of Lysianne and his brother, who seem to be driven mad by his indifference. the first part is a bit flawed, as a few scenes appear to be too obssessed with the gay theme shock value, but visually this is mind-blowing from the start. It is when it begins to deal with the emotions of the main characters that this film really becomes powerful.

reply

Agreed. I think it's a true original, beautiful, sexy and outrageous in its own level.

I have to agree, Querelle is superb as movie about the gay community in harbors.

I don't know if you're being serious or sarcastic, but whether you liked (which I did) this film or not, I still found your comment delightfully amusing :)

no, I really liked this movie, ie I liked the hat Brad Davis wore, it made his sex appeal go up
but another thing I love this film for, is the crucifixion when Querelle and his brother are fighting/playing
I remember the first time I saw this picture and I was thinking: holy BEEP, what a great movie this is!
it's so ironic: the movie goes on... and oh, yeah, there's a crucifixion, but the camera doesn't care about THAT, it just follows Querelle and his brother
for me, that's THE scene I will remember this movie by

LOL.

What do you think of the bowler hat Lena Olin wears in "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" then?

reply

well, long time ago I saw TULOB and I didn't like it
indeed, the bowler hat is one of the few things I remember about it that I DID like, together with a mirror sequence I can't quite remember well
maybe I should see it again or read the book first
hats are important, they can make or break a memorable scene in a movie
what would Indiana Jones be without his hat? I guess that was the first hat I ever really noticed
I can say the hat in Querelle had a simular effect on me, perhaps even more

Read The Unbearable Lightness of Being, it's a wonderful book with aphrodisiac powers. I was reading it on a beach last summer when this gorgeous Belgian walked by me and after talking for a while, we ended up in his bed together. It was his last night in the US - lucky me!

okay, thx for the tip
the problem with me is that I can't make up my mind, shich means I read many books at the same time, which is why I can't enjoy reading (but I keep reading)
now I'm reading a Kafka book, a book about cats, a Stephen King book, a crime novel and three books about movies

What Kafka book? I love "Letter to the Father" (think that's the English title) and I adapted "The Metamorphosis" into a short script for a class last year.

I just read "Zeroville" by Steve Erickson, which was awesome, then just finished "Cinema: Concept and Practice" by veteran director Edward Dmytryk and now I'm reading three Bergman screenplays. Trying to catch up with my reading this summer!

it was my first Kafka, thus 'The Trial', but I found it a bit difficult... anyway, I bought the collection, so I guess next year I will read 'The Castle'
Stephen King book: 'It', but it's so BEEPing thick!
crime book from Jef Vermassen 'Moordenaars en hun Motieven' ('Murderers and their Motives'), but til now it was only about monkeys and their 'crimes' (monkeys and politics, monkeys and rape, monkeys and murder, ...)
but I will read much more in about two weeks, after the exams

There was way too much machismo in this film for me, might be alright if you're a Stallone fan.

"Its not surprising you feel uncomfortable watching REAL men on screen."

Considering how intensely bigoted you are this is your most hilarious 'fail' yet. You're just too fücking thick to even know what you're talking about.
