Best acting by any professional baseball player?

The work done by Ron Cey in this film was truly amazing. Has there ever been a better performance in cinema by a baseball player who was still active at the time?

I joked to myself, "hey, look at Ron Cey" then was astonished when the credits told me it was actually him!

I wonder if Davey Lopes, Bill Russell, and Steve Garvey did a screen test? Perhaps their jealousy over Cey's casting triggered the splintering of that great Dodger infield.

I don't know much about baseball, but I have been a huge ice hockey fan for decades, and when I saw the blond mustache man I thought "Hey, it's NHL forward Bill Clement!"

At that time, Clement's playing career was on it's last legs, and he had dabbled in broadcasting, at which he later became very successful.
