Kim Cattrall - why did she do Porky's?

Given Kim Cattrall's career up until 1982, her decision to play the part of Miss Honeywell in Porky's seemed to me a bit 'left field'. Appearing in a tacky sex comedy where she would get nailed in a school gym making animal noises?

Up to that point, Kim Cattrall had appeared in several well-known (now legendary) TV shows like Columbo, Starsky & Hutch, The Incredible Hulk, Quincy, Charlie's Angels. She'd acted with Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick in a film called Tribute (1980) and in the same year a TV movie called The Gossip Columnist with Robert Vaughan.

In an old interview from 1980, Cattrall said she was very happy with where her career was, and waxing lyrical about starring in her first feature film with Lemmon and Remick. She also stated that - given her experience - she would 'turn down a role if she felt it wasn't right for her' even if it were in a major motion picture.

Kim went on to say that when she first went to Hollywood 'she would have done anything' to get experience.

That's why her appearance in Porky's in '82 - is baffling. She wasn't exactly a rookie actress looking for a big break. The role didn't really do anything for her career either.

She had played quite serious roles prior to this flick, and Cattrall came across as quite demure when she was a young actress.

I'm speculating that she gambled - acting in a teenage sex comedy as a vehicle to boost her career. I wonder if she privately regrets doing Porky's?

Given the sexual nature of shows like SEX AND THE CITY or her apparently posing for Playboy on the set of STAR TREK 6, I don't see why she would regret anything about PORKY'S. Aside from TV work, this was her only film role between 1981 and 1984. Maybe she just did it for the work. But she did work with the same director previously on TRIBUTE, and later films like TURK 182 and BABY GENIUSES. Whether PORKY'S helped her career or not, it was a massive hit at the box office.

I suppose one could argue that at least 'Sex and The City' reinvented her career at a time when a lot of actresses - aged over 40 - begin to struggle to find work. She wouldn't regret doing 'Sex and The City' as the series elevated her profile. In Porky's - did 'that sex scene' do anything for her immediate career? I would say probably not.

No. We only get a look at her butt, but the whole scene was more about the humor of her howling during sex. I don't think "Hey, Kim Cattrall Nude" was the point of the scene.

Of course it was good for her. Ask anyone to name all the actors/actresses in Porky's. You'll come up with one name.

For her "acting" skills, she should be grateful to have ever been an actress. Terrible at best.

Here's a radical thought, maybe she saw the script and thought it looked like fun? Actors do that you know. They take movies that are silly or intentionally trashy because they look funny or fun to make. It's not really that confusing.

I'm more surprised that Susan Clark decided to do this movie.
She was fairly well-known at the time, married to an even better known husband (who's also in the movie, of course), had been in a Disney movie and was soon to be on a family sitcom (Webster).
Seems to me she would've been much more concerned about her career by playing Cherry Forever.
