Gray hair

When Diane is at the moving truck she all of the sudden has a long chunk of gray hair. What do you think that was about, how did she suddenly get that?

reply

It was from her exposure to the spirit world.

There is a saying you get so scared your hair goes grey. This is seen in other horror movies like IT and Nightmare On Elm Street. It scares you to your inner soul.

reply

It also happens to Ash in Evil Dead 2.

Which is complete nonsense.

It happened to my supervisor in real life. He had a full head of black hair. He had an accident that scared the bejeezus out of him. His hair turned white over a matter of a few weeks.

It was an indication to show that the spirits weren't finished with messing with the family.

Under extreme stress, your hair can go grey but it would only show at the root level. Not with whole strands.

That means the spirits elongated her greying as a way of saying, "We aren't done yet."

Personally, I like the idea. It's an old wives tale that if you get scared by something your hair will turn white. I think it's a neat old legend. I like that it's here. Although after her experience in the pool, you'd think her entire scalp would be white.

Her gray hair was caused by her worrying so much about Carol Anne. Stress and worrying will do that to you.

It's iconic now.

As others have noted other horror films copied it, notably A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) & Evil Dead II (1987).

Gray hair has witch symbology. It can mean the person went to the other side and came back with magic. It also references the Crone stage of life as a witch. Diane achieved this status as a younger woman due to her journey.
