I can't believe I've never heard of this movie before!

This movie had the most memorable beginning and ending I have ever seen from an animated film. Like Watership Down, the animals were human characters, not just animals that could talk. I was actually thankful for the island that appeared in the mist. I think its the only way I could have ever convinced my daughter not to cry herself to sleep. Any more movies like this out there?

I've never come across an animated film with such an emotional impact as The Plague Dogs... perhaps because I'm a dog lover and am quite familiar with many of the settings depicted in the movie... though only partly for these reasons. It's just an out-and-out heartbreaker.
One of the finest.

I don't think there are any movies out there that could properly compare to The Plague Dogs, but there are some that at least come close. :) For something with the same amount of tragedy and emotional impact, I'd recommend checking out Grave of the Fireflies, a semi-autobiographical animated film about two children living in Japan during WW2. If you're after a film with a distinctive animation style similar to that of this film, it might be worth watching Fantastic Planet. It's a French sci-fi animation about humans being kept as pets by giant blue aliens, and the look of it can best be described as an animated painting, I think. I also recommend The Adventures of Mark Twain, which is a stop-motion animated film from the 80s (you might want to check that you have the right one before buying or renting this one, as there's also a live-action film out there with the same title). Like The Plague Dogs, it's very underrated and intriguing, and feels like a perfect animated film.

There's also Allegro Non Troppo, which is worth checking out mainly because of one section in particular set to "Valse Triste". The whole film is worth checking out, but I'll add a link to that section for you here: (be warned, you'll probably need tissues afterwards :P) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8Oc_J1Lu-o Anyway, I hope this is of some help to you! :) It's always great to see new Plague Dogs fans! ^-^

Try 'When the Wind Blows' for another animated movie that you won't forget.
