Should I watch?

I'm an adult who holds admiration for classical animation and also a dog lover.
I've read this film is rather depressing.

My question is, does this film hold redeeming values? I don't mean a downright ''happy ending'' in the conventional sense of the word ''happy'', but redeeming at least. Not mean.

Please no spoilers.

I would definitely recommend it. Since you are a dog lover this will tug at your heartstrings. After I saw this, it made me appreciate my dogs even more than I already did.

It obviously does not have a generic happy ending, but it ends very metaphorically. I feel like the ending was open for interpretation. Make sure you watch until the very end, because the blatant symbolism doesn't appear until the credits start rolling.

It is a tragic and horribly depressing film, but a beautiful one nonetheless. As long as you don't expect a generic animated plot and ending, you won't be disappointed.

Thanks, that's the response I was looking for. I'll go for it.

Did you watch it? I never will because I could cry just reading about the story but I am curious as to how someone fared after contemplating viewing it.

Please, go...Stop smiling, it's not a joke. Please leave...The party's over. Get out.

I'm a huge animal lover and believer in animal rights...been a fan of Watership Down and Secret of NIMH since ages 8-12 but somehow, the OLDER I get, the harder it is for me to try to sit thru a story of such horror and cruelty. I got as far as the scene where the 2 dogs were in the incinerator and the lab workers were starting their morning rounds or whatever...I couldn't go further. Just too much for me I guess.

I was not expecting the animation quality of this movie to be as good as it was, considering it was made in 1982. The thing that I admired most in the animation was how realistically all the animals' behaviors were portrayed. You could tell the animators painstakingly did their research to express the personalities of each animal through their mannerisms. The soundtrack in this film also does a great job of creating an unsettling atmosphere to help you better understand the emotional struggle the two protagonists go through.

Overall, this was a wonderfully animated, sad, dark film that will give you a greater appreciation for dogs and all animals in general.

Yes,

You should watch this.
As a dog lover, you should watch this.
As a human, you should watch this.

More accurately speaking, you should experience this.

You will cry, you will be sad, but you will also be moved as no other movie has ever done so before.

I watched it almost 20 years ago, and was riveted to my seat the whole time. I cried my eyes out. I loved it, and yet I can't ever watch it again.

Not recommended for young children, for no reason other than it's too painful for the young, but should be required for adults.

The only redemption is that the dogs are never caught again and die together when swimming out to sea. This is a bleak film. Much worse than Watership Down but it's a very good film too.

I give my respect to those who have earned it; to everyone else, I'm civil.
