There's a few I haven't seen but so far only lovers left alive was definitely a highlight, but night on Earth was probably my favourite, a lot like permanent vacation but with more scope, I love a good portmanteau film.

Ghost dog is a good shout, too, from the previous reply, loved it.

There hasn't been one I haven't liked yet.

Even a student should do something better than this. His next movie was very good (Stranger Than Paradise). There's not much to criticize, the movie is empty. It had the potential, a blueprint, but there really isn't a script.

My favourite is Paterson. The closest runners-up: Stranger Than Paradise, Mystery Train, Dead Man and Ghost Dog.

I must admit, I found Permanent Vacation almost unwatchable.

reply

Loved Paterson! I also enjoyed Only Lover's Left Alive quite a bit.

reply

Yes, while Only Lovers Left Alive isn't one of my favourites, it's still a pretty good film.

reply

Nah, I say Stranger Than Paradise, with the disclaimer that I haven't seen any of his movies after Ghost Dog. Permanent Vacation is his weakest from I what I have seen, but I don't judge it harshly because it is his first.

In the 90s his movies became a bit too "jarmuschian" or formulaic, if you will. Good and enjoyable, but... just that. If you want to watch a 8/10 movie, a Jarmusch movie is a good bet. But it is more about style than substance.

I love the portrayal of dilapidated USA in his earlier movies.

Mystery Train and Down by Law are other honorable mentions.

reply

I like all of those films which you mention too, while also agreeing to some degree with your criticisms.

If you want a Jarmusch film with more 'substance' I would strongly recommend Paterson... it has a warmth, a heart that even his best early movies somewhat lack, and Adam Driver's performance is wonderful.
