I think it has to do with the 'reality' vs. 'representation of reality = reality' question which seems to be a constant in Godard's work. By using their real names they become a truer representation of the real world, while at the same time it takes them further from the accepted reality of film. It's like breaking the 4th wall in audio.
But I have to say Godard is going overboard in this film and gets too academic for my tastes. The film actually feels more like classroom material than anything else.
