filming locations

IMDB gives us several sites in Washington, none specific to scenes. I'd like to know where those beautiful old limestone columns are located. Looks like the ruin of an old building - would help if I could remember the scene - but I've only seen the movie twice. If anyone knows what/where I'm talking about, please let me know!

The majority of the scences were filmed at Fort Worden State Park located in Port Townsend in Washington State. It became a state park in 1972 but was originally built between 1898-1908 (approx.) as a military defense base to protected the Strait of Juan deFuca (the body of water surrounding it)from possible enemy invasion which is the entry way to the major Port of Seattle and Puget Sound. It was used during World War I as well as World War II.
I'm assuming the "limestone columns" you mention is in reference to the training course scenes. Those are the old gun batteries where the huge guns were mounted to be fired to protect the Strait. The guns have long been taken away and scapped but all of the batteries are still there and there are quite a few of them. They are really cool too because they have all sorts of
corridors and passage ways that wind in and through them to explore.
The big white buildings were the barracks that the soldiers were housed in. Today they are rented out for conferences, wedding receptions, and overnight lodgings etc. If you want more info on Fort Worden you can google it and it will give more interesting info. Hope that helps.

Wow! Sensational reply! You're incredibly knowledgeable on your subject. Thank you for the history lesson, as well as where to find more pictures of those ruins.

I have lived in Wa State all my life. The motel they went to is still there but was remodeled a few years back. It all looks so familiar to me, I love it! My only confusion was the ferry Kulshan. I don't recall it being on the Port Townsend run. We call it "the topless ferry" and when I lived in Mukilteo I used to watch it from my window on its run from Mukilteo to Whidbey Island. I also don't understand why the girls took a ferry. The paper mill is in Port Townsend and Paula's house is in PT. Things I don't get. LOL

The paper mill is in Tacoma.
