What was the fight trying to prove?

I could never understand the point of the fight between Mayo and Foley at the end of the movie. Mayo decides to DOR and Foley says to him "Let's meet in the blimp hanger ..[and] we ain't going there to talk, boy!" After he whips Mayo, he tells Nayo that he can DOR now if he wants to. Of course, Mayo doesn't and goes on to graduate from OTS. On graduation, he thanks Foley, and tells him that "he wouldn't have made it without him."

But what was the significance of the fight?

reply

I think it was just egos. Foley trying to show Mayo he was still badass and Mayo trying to prove Foley wasn't so tough.

And sometimes men just need to see who is tougher.

reply

Foley proved he was a man and not just talk to mayo

reply

exept there is no way foley would have defeated mayo. mayo trained in martial arts in the Philippians and had likely been in many fights. something that officer training would not give you. in real life officers even those who teach martial arts are only thought enough to make them thank they are tough

reply

Uhh... what?

Foley was a USMC Gunnery Sergeant. He was an enlisted, not an officer.

An enlisted who had achieved an E-7 rank in the Marine Corps, and had seen plenty more fights than some selfish brat who just graduated Philipino clown college.

If you think Marines aren't tough, you should tell a Marine how you feel. They probably have some compelling evidence to show you.

 haha thats hilarious

It makes you wonder who would have actually won the fight if Foley hadn't resorted to a cheap shot.

reply

It wasn't a cheap shot. It was a street fight in which Marquess of Queensberry rules don't apply.

reply

in reality someone who got there martial arts training in the mean streets of the Philippians would be far tougher then someone who is only tough enough to make him believe that he is tough

reply

Mayo to that point had only fought boys, Foley was the first real man he had ever fought. A couple of drunk punks do not count. Foley was a tough veteran who had been in his share of conflicts. Just because he taught martials arts in basic training does not mean that's all he knew. Foley realized that Mayo had a lot of anger in him and was making stupid decisions because of that, he needed a outlet for all that steam, and Foley provided the outlet. After the fight it was up to Mayo to choose his path.

richardpaperboy is the only one on this board who was correct about the reason for the fight. I was incredibly touched that Foley would fight Mayo in order to save him from himself.

We'll see who's the filthiest person alive! We'll just see!

This was nice for a movie but in real life Foley would be thrown off the job for resorting to this nonsense....if these 2 had actually been seriously hurt...and they could have been the way they were pounding each other, Foley probably would have actually gone to jail..and Mayo been booted out. This is Hollywood stuff. not reality.

reply

So you believe ONLY in Hollywood have military men/women (especially us/men:)) fought each other in controlled environments?

You're talking about CONsequences,..that doesn't always ensure Common Sense will win the day?

Military, Law Enforcement, DIA, CIA, FBI,...I bet they've ALL had "Closed Door" "Wall to Wall" Meetings.

Anytime you have testosterone, hormones, egos, and enough opportunities to be STUPID,..you will get some Stupidity.

This is what was really going on.

An officer is a military leader. Foley's job is to weed out those who can't hack it as an officer, a leader. It's an important job because people's lives in combat are dependent on the quality of the leaders and Foley takes his job seriously.

Foley rightly pegs Mayo as a lowlife loner from the outset -- a wannabe officer -- and therefore puts on the pressure. This is especially so on the one weekend where he has Mayo to himself. Foley does everything he can to make Mayo break AND quit, but he doesn't. Mayo breaks, but he refuses to quit on the grounds that he has no where to go. At the end of this scene you see that Foley develops respect for Mayo (which you get a glimpse of earlier when Mayo does extremely well on the obstacle course).

Later, Mayo disregards breaking the record on the obstacle course (which he was definitely able to do) in order to encourage Seegar (the female recruit) to finally makes it over the wall. Foley sees that Mayo's no longer the aloof and selfish loner he was when he rode in on his motorcyle. He's matured; he's developed character. It was already there, but the boot camp training has brought it to the surface, and Foley sees it.

After Worley's death, Mayo confronts Foley while he's drilling the platoon. Foley informs Mayo that they all know what happened and even tells him they're sorry about Worley. He didn't have to do this and it shows that Foley isn't just an honorable man, but that he also cared about Worley. After all, Worley was only one week away from graduating! In a sense, he was one of Foley's kids. But Mayo's crazy with shock & grief at this point and says he's going to quit, to which Foley tells him to meet him for the fight. Sure, there's some testosterone in his words, but he actually does this out of respect for Mayo as a last ditch effort to keep him from dropping out.

And Foley didn't "kick his ass", as some posters claim. It was essentially an even match and Foley barely walks off the mat, which is the only reason he technically wins. But that's inconsequential. The purpose of the fight was to run Mayo's steam out so he didn't make a rash decision in a moment of grief & anger. Foley accomplished his purpose. Once Mayo was no longer blinded by rage he makes the right choice and graduates.

Perfect summation! Well written Wuchakk!

"Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?"

reply

That was a good explaination from Foley's point of view, but it takes two to tango.

Mayo really wanted to help his friend Worley graduate just as Worley helped him get through that aviation physics class. Worley's DOR and subsequent death ruined those plans. Mayo previously endurred a weekend putting up with Foley's abuse, with Foley trying to personally get Mayo to DOR. I think Mayo thought Foley found a new target in Worley and that Foley pushed Worley to DOR the same way he tried to get Mayo to do it. He may have even thought Foley did it to get back at Mayo.

When Foley told Mayo that he heard about Worley, Foley did not sound very broken up about it. I think that caused Mayo to focus all his rage at Foley and challenge him.

There is another thing peopke aren't mentioning. Perhaps Foley was just a little mad about the wasted effort/weekend? I think he wanted to kick his ass a bit just for that fact. You don't just quit. It was understandable in the circumstance, but nothing to agree with.

Mayo was at the crossroads in his life and a good leader will push him in the right direction, but like when Foley says "you can quit now..." Ultimately it is Mayo's decision to do what is right. Of course his groan of pain is also rather telling. Mayo was going through a recovery process and absolutely going through it (mom...friend...the goal...his nut sack/man hood)

reply

"Whips" Mayo? Seemed like a pretty even fight to me...Actually expect for the last groin kick Mayo was beating the crap out of Foley.

reply

Yeah it was an "even fight" ending with Foley standing over Mayo, who was down on the mat holding his groin in excruciating pain. One need not be a rocket scientist to figure out who was victorious at the end of the day.

reply

Standing over Mayo? Seems to me after watching it He barley stumbled away very hurt himself. yeah he won...but not before taking a beating.

"yeah he won..."

Suffice it to say ... my point proven ...let's move on.

Guys often beat the hell out of each other with no real motive...lots of men just go for a good dust up to test themselves against another strong guy
