was Michael Keaton on coke?

First of all, his film debut is one of the most inspired yet most underrated comic performances of the past 40 years. other than Beatlejuice and maybe Mr. Mom, he never, ever gave such a performance of this kind in his subsequent movies. His energy level provides the perfect antithesis to Winkler's very subdued straight man...that being said...
Was he on coke on this movie? someone mentioned it on youtube and it was always an afterthought..
what do you think?

reply

I don't think so. He was absolutely, brilliant. His explaination of the word Prostitution, is one of the funniest things ever.

reply

So...an actor making his feature film debut displays high energy and he is thought to be on coke? right.

"Blow it ouchyer ear, Reiger..!" Louie De Palma

"Coffee is for closers." Blake

Oh no, he wasn't on Coke. Michael Keaton time and time again has always said they he prefers Pepsi to Coke. :D

I don't know anything about Michael Keaton's personal habits, past or present — other than his apparent addiction to turning in excellent performances — but I think a case could be made that the character of Bill Blazejowski is buzzing on something legal or illegal (or possibly some combination).

reply

No, he was on coke in "Clean and Sober." Not a comedy, but a very strong performance. Check it out.

It was 1982...wasn't everyone?

reply

I wasn't - on coke - but I tried POT for the first and last time in '82.

I think Keaton himself would NOT have been on cocaine, but perhaps the character was, however there are no indicators of that.

The only drug reference is is when they in the tricked up car and he pretends to be taking a drag on reefer showing that the cops can't see through the darkly tinted windows.

If Keaton's character were on cocaine, it would of been just like Scarface with a ton of powdered milk. Even when Night Shift was filmed and cocaine at that time in 1982-3 was a drug users choice, Ron Howard and company would be still sitting in federal prison. I was born in '68 and do remember well when Beetlejuice and Clean and Sober were in theaters. For the latter, I remember being curious at that time if Keaton had tried cocaine o prepare for his role as Daryl because he gave such a dead on performance in that film, just as he did in Night Shift. I can't believe at the time Night Shift was filmed that Keaton was still 30 and Henry Winkler was 36 years old and this year Mike will be 63 and Henry 69 years old.
