I'm glad others like this film too! ( SPOILERS)
I first saw this chilling film several years ago. I still have it on VHS.
What struck me first was how eerily dark the film was. It added to the terrific suspense that was building slowly. The characters were made "human" in the film, rather than "cardboard cutouts" you see in most films today. They all had fleshed-out personalities, good or evil.
There was no faceless Jason Voorhees or Freddy Krueger running amok etc.
The music score was great, and as several posters have said, has wonderful cinematography. The scenes between the lovely Jacki Kerin and handsome John Jarratt are so sweet.

One question: What happened to Lance at the end?
We see him make a run for it out the window, so we assume he survives. But how come Linda doesn't find him and take him away with her when she flees? Granted, she's terribly, understandably traumatized at the time, but she had always looked out for him through the entire film.
And in the end, I'm assuming she drives back to find him (even though she's even more traumatized, even in shock at the time).
Oh well, either way its a very fine film. Well worth watching over and over again!!!
