DVD???

is there a dvd available of this great film??

reply

i don't think so. if you find one, PLEASE tell me on this board!
i like this movie very much and i'd love to have a dvd copy of it (i've got the great soundtrack on dvd copy).

A DVD was recently released in Australia. Found a copy today (in a bargain bin!) for under $10. The disc itself is barebones, no extras to speak of, but the film itself is presented in a nice, clear anamorphic widescreen transfer. The sound is a decent, but muffled Dolby 2.0 track. Nothing to crow about certainly, but it's nice to have this on DVD at last, and in widescreen.

On the site it states 1.78,even though its anamorphic,im sure the film was shot in the 2.35 scope ratio...any info??

reply

The dvd was in either 1.85 or 1.78, couldn't tell for sure, anyway it sure wasn't 2.35.

reply

i think that the original ratio is 1:85.

watched again the film last night thanks to the australian dvd,and i still love it...the direction, cinematography, music and lead acting are really first rate and wonderful!
such a pity that Tony Williams didn't direct films after this gem...

reply

You know, I just HAD to put my thoughts about the aspect ratio on record. I just got the dvd from xploitedcinema.com. It IS anamorphc 1.78...but I SWEAR it was filmed in 2.35! I think they just formatted it for widescreen TVs, not really caring if it was in the correct ratio or not. At least it fills up the TV screen, right? WRONG. If they're going to transfer it, do it PROPERLY. I'm am 99% positive it was supposed to be 2.35. There is a scene where there is a bunch of people on the porch, and even though it's 1.85, the screen cuts to half the scene, then cuts to the other half, with people overlapping at the ends. Make sense? THIS leads me to believe it was 2.35. The DVD from xploitedcinema is nice though: has a trailer and all. And there are two different covers to choose from. It's a nice package, but too bad about the transfer.
The movie? Oh yeah...it's pretty darn good.

Just been reading the posts and am glad to see people like Next of kin. I'm Tony Williams's son and have had a hell of a time the last few years finding a copy of the film. He had lost his only copy and the distributer was hard to find. By chance i found out that of all people Quentin Tarentino was a huge fan of next of kin and had shown a friend the movie. So as soon as he heard that Tony was desperate for a copy he fedex his own copy to me to pass on! He also noted that he personallly had been trying to convince distributers to release the movie on DVD, that was about 2 years ago now. So with this sudden re-release of the film i can possibly thank Quentin for pushing it forward. On another note Tony only directed 2 films before making his mark as a commercials director, most memorable the Toyota 'Bugger' ad.

hello Nick,

congratulations for the stunning work of your father on "Next of Kin"!
His film is really a masterpiece of direction and mood/atmosphere.
i'd wish that Tony would direct another movie...and "Next of kin" surely deserves a beautiful special edition on dvd!

reply

Hey Nick,
all the best to your father. Tell him i'm a big fan of this/his film. And i second the "special edition" request by 'guigui-paul'. I would LOVE to hear a commentary from the man!

Very cool that there's a DVD out there of this great film! I saw in late 80's in TV and was scared to death. I'll always remember the scene with the body in the bathtub... SE DVD would certainly be welcome, at least a commentary track would be appreciated. Nick, does your father have any behind the scenes footage or photos left from the shoot? Even if they couldn't finance a real making of -documentary with interviews, some behind the scenes footage (with director's commentary/interview) and a feature length commentary would be quite easy to put together. If someone would be kind enough to re-release the DVD... I believe there would be an audience large enough to make it worthwhile!

Ha! This seems to be a family affair! (Hi Nick - your sister Jess here) I just wanted to ad that I found myself looking through my daughter's bedroom door keyhole the other day saying "I...can seeeee...you...."

Me thinks I've seen the film one too many times!

Just wanted to say that i think it's just so cool to hear from Tony, Jess and Nick!

I have LOVED this film ever since it was shown on Belgian tv 14 or 15 years ago. I don't remember the exact age i was but i remember it was late at night and i was thrilled by this movie and it's brilliant cinematography, mood, story, music and atmosphere. I've even gotten my hands on a copy of the Klaus Schultze original soundtrack.

At that time, not a lot of people, nobody to be honest, in my surroundings ever heard of this movie. Now finally i can say to someone that i AM A FAN!

Hi to Tony, Nick and Jess Williams!! And all the fans of Next of Kin. I grew up in Melbourne Australia but have been in L.A. for the past 17 years chasing my dream of being a movie writer/director. I used to hate Aussie films, thought they were crap - until I saw Road Warrior and... NEXT OF KIN. Best Aussie horror film ever made. Creepy, Suspenseful and chilling - that scene in the dark bedroom with the muttering "old woman" in the wig sitting with her back to us and the scissors in her hand - oh MAN! That was pure cinematic genius. Tony, you need to do another great Aussie horror film, mate. And it's nice to see your son and daughter Nick and Jess commenting on the board. Can anyone imagine that happening with a Hollywood type. No way! They're too self-important. Anyway, just wanted to say hi and thanks for a great film. I'll be getting a copy now I know it's on DVD.

As far as I know there has never been an official DVD released in any Region.

In Feb 09 I emailed the distributor that owns the rights to the film (Reel) and they said they have no plans at this stage to release NEXT OF KIN on DVD. : (

Annoying, as I am sure there is a solid market out there for a re-release.

reply

It's been said repeatedly on these boards that there is a Region 4 DVD. It's OOP now but still exists!
