Happy sigh . . .

I like a lot of things about this movie, but I especially love the fact that the band in the night club responds to the cry of "Somebody stole my girl!" as a song cue.

No explanation for the movie audience -- you either know the song and get the joke, or not.

As someone with a life-long case of what I call "Everything's a Song Cue Syndrome," it just makes me so happy!

I loved that too :)
I pity the people who do not know their history and am so sorry for all the fun things they miss.

My husband and I are movie line buffs. Our entire relationship, we have used movie lines in our conversations and no one knows what we are talking about ;)

We text message each other with lines that no one else understands, for example, "I'm allllright! I'm allllright!" ("It's a Wonderful Life", Uncle Billy after he crashes off-camera into a garbage can).

Be well,
Shal..

I take it you are watching it on TCM right now!

A favorite line is coming up -- "Of course he's beneath us -- he's an actor!"

reply

I've loved this movie since I saw it in 1982. This is the perfect way to start 2011! 1954, the year this movie portrays and the year I was born. At least ONE of my favorite years!

I love this movie, I haven't been able to find a DVD of it yet. I'm really happy they're playing it on TCM! A wonderful way to spend a Sunday afternoon...

reply

Just had to reply, as I feel like I'm watching with kindred spirits. My daughter (age 20) and I are movie buffs and we speak to each other in lines. I had to laugh at your post and I read it to her. Her response was "Sounds vaguely familiar..." Awaiting Herb's line..!

reply

My husband said, "God, this makes me happy!"

:D

Sounds normal to me! Besides movies and songs, I grew up quoting radio and vaudeville routines from way before my time. My family and friends are all major quoters.

Sometimes we need to call out (as Dennis Miller did in a long-ago comedy routine -- see, even this is a quote!) "Stop me before I cross-reference again!"

reply

LOL :D

We're never going to get anything done today,
"Forbidden Planet" coming on next...*sigh*...

And I wanted to watch Tyrone Power in "The Mark of Zorro" after watching Alan Swan do all that sword work ;)

"Boy, I got vision and the rest of the world's wearing bifocals."

reply

Yep - we caught "Singin' in the Rain" before MFY. While I love "Forbidden Planet," it's not a great follow up to MFY. Would love to see "The Adventures of Robin Hood" or anything a bit more uptempo. FP has an odd, narcotic feel!

reply

Alas, I am Robin Hood-less at the moment.
I gave my DVD to a little friend (11 years old) who came to visit and we had a girl's night, watched "The Adventures of Robin Hood" and did our nails ;) She asked the next night, "May we watch it AGAIN?" :D So I gave her the movie when she went home. :) I'm sure she was under Errol's spell ;)

Must pass the torch to the younger generation! ;)

(Watching "Forbidden Planet" with my husband who is a space nut ;)
He deserves the break :)

I'm sure "The Mask of Zorro" will play sometime tonight, taped though, will get DVD sometime I'm sure...

We've abandoned TCM for "Imitation of Life" on TVOne. Glad to hear that it's still possible to interest young'uns in this vintage stuff. Who could not be under the spell of Flynn??? My daughter loves Tyrone Power in "The Mark of Zorro" and one of her all time favorites is "The Crimson Pirate" with Burt Lancaster. Swashbuckling has, sadly, become obsolete!

reply

Ahhh, "Imitation of Life" gooood one! (I like both Lana Turner's version and Claudette Colbert's) We don't get TVOne.
I'm in CA.

And Burt in "The Crimson Pirate" be still my heart!

Watching "Pirates of the Caribbean, The Black Pearl", I kept whispering to my husband in the theater..."Everyone here thinks these stunts are new!" and I'd list the movie for each as they came along, "The Crimson Pirate" (walking along the bottom of the sea under the boat, "Doug Fairbanks, Sr. did that!", "Captain Blood"..., etc... :) Oh well, let's hope they like the swashbuckling enough to bgo find the Classics ;)

reply

I found a copy of "Crimson Pirate" last Christmas (2009) for my daughter. She was thrilled! Banderas did a decent job of raising the pulse but, yes, the oldies were the best. That's one of the great things about MFY - the casting of O'Toole for Flynn was genius. He had the right amount of bad boy in him.

Great chatting with you!

reply

What a great present! I could just watch Burt Lancaster stand still for 2 hours, he wouldn't have to do anything :)

O'Toole WAS perfect! If you look at old tv shows on youtube, he is playing Errol Flynn to a "t". I really enjoyed seeing "MFY" today, and meeting up with you here :)

Be well...

Burt did have presence.

I loved those old-school Zorro movies as a kid.

I love people like that.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know who played the girl that Swann danced with in the nightclub? She looks so familiar, but was only referenced to as "Playmate" on the front page of the paper, and she's uncredited in the cast & crew listings.

This is driving me nuts, because I KNOW that face, but can't place it!

Anyone able to help me out?
Thanks!

BTW, I, too, am one of those people who'll starting singing an old stanza of a song from the days of yore, thanks to TCM movies mainly, when someone says something that strikes me as needing a touch of a "musical." My biggest is mangling "I Love You So Much" from "Three Little Words" to my son (I put my own words into it). Sometimes my kids think I'm nuts because I'll do this so much, but oh, I do love my classic movies (and have converted my youngest into a viewer)!

Nice to know there are others like me (sort of) out there... (G)

Wolfsmistress, she is credited, but the character name wouldn't really ring a bell. She looks familiar because she is Gloria Stuart:

I think he's talking about the younger woman he leaves with and is photographed for the paper with. The lady you mention was the Older Rose in Titanic.
