Just watched this on Turner Classic Movies...

... and realized I did not have it in my DVD collection... I made a quick bounce over to Amazon, looking to grab a used version... the CHEAPEST price for a used DVD of this is $75!!! Is there some reason why this movie is so collectible?? I was SHOCKED at the price!

"The Court Jester" is the same way! My guess is supply and demand. They just didn't make many copies. So unfair!

reply

Wow, I'm surprised. I remember renting it from my local Blockbuster store 5 to 10 years ago. There was always a copy available. No demand that I could see.

reply

I was shocked too -- I have a copy I recorded years ago on vhs and transferred to DVD, but if I had known the movie was that rare, I would have recorded it when TCM ran it yesterday. Darn...

How sad, that you were not born in my time, nor I, in yours.

I bought my copy for around $10 (maybe even as little as $5) when Borders Books was going out of business. Granted, it isn't blu-ray nor is it remastered in any way -- it's just a basic DVD.

Just about any flavor dvd is hard to come by these days for a decent price. I bought mine - probably 2002 or so for $15 or less; it's the one that had the director's commentary and maybe one or two other relatively meaningless little extras. I'm glad to have it though and that's for sure!

reply

Hey, Captain Tony, I'll sell you my extra used copy for $30, you pay the postage! I snagged them years ago, and the title also doubles as my security question on websites that require one for identification verification.

Like I mentioned above, I bought my copy for $10 (at the most) when Borders Books went out of business...

...But I will say that this is one film that could use a remastering. My copy is good, but not great.

reply

.. Well, those days are long gone, my friend, as are the Borders stores, more's the pity. I don't mind parting with the used copy of it, especially to a true believer, lol, someone who loves the film.
.. Here's hoping Tony picks up on this soon. Since I mentioned it, I've had someone PM me about it, and she's very interested & fairly insistent that it happen soon.

As long as this film has been out, and considering the frequent airings it received on the cable channels in the 1980's and 90's, I would be surprised if fans of the film haven't made a copy somewhere along the way. Of course, if you're new to the film, I see your point.

I hope it comes out on DVD soon.
