One of the most under rated movies ever.

I saw this movie at the theater in 82 and loved it. The plane, the lake, the eerie bagpipes. Of course the mines. Why can this movie never be found anywhere?

reply

Because it's overlooked and lowbudget-like, I also do like the scheme of the movie and that it got this dark adventure feeling, but I don't think it deserves some 8/10, rather 6/10.
But hey that's not bad! It just doesn't happen to be the best of films; If you like adventure flicks with lots of action watch too: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085678/

Great underrated title. As most of Tom Selleck's flicks are tho.

I agree I love this movie. Who do we write to get them to release it on DVD

reply

I'd like to see it on DVD, too. The freakin' plane crash was incredible!

It took me over 12 months to come across a copy of Mother Lode, I got it off ebay on VHS, it is still an excellent movie.

I got Mother Lode on dvd since some years ago ;)

"Mother Lode" appears to be available as a Region 2 DVD from Sweden, with the original English sountrack and Swedish subtitles. The Swedish title is "Hett Guld." I don't know if the subs are forced or not. Apparently the aspect ratio is 4:3. You should be able to order it from: http://english.megastore.se

reply

Heh I live in sweden so I can tell ;) Hett = hot btw, and guld = gold ofc.. Hot Gold - Mother lode (basically same thing) and the subtitles are not forced afaik, and yup the picture is fullscreen and not widescreen

reply

What's the transfer like?

reply

I'm sorry you were right, it has got forced swedish subtitle and the transfer rate is 2-4 mb if I saw right.. but the most definite seems to be 3, I think 6-7 is a normal quality dvd flick? oh and in the start of the film (the intro) the picture is a little to left so you cant see all the text, but that seems fixed when the movie starts.. if you really like this move then I would see no problems spending 5 euro, 3,6 pound or 7 dollar. But it's definitely one of the worst dvd quality films I have. Unless you compare it with my version of "Chiefs" which has even worse quality probably.

I loved this movie and would really like to get a copy. Speaking of the crash of the float plane on the lake, I read somewhere some years ago that it was not planned that way but was an actual accidental crash on camera so they wrote it into the script. The original plan was for the two young adventureres to fly the plane out in the end. Sure made a great scene.

I used to underappreciate it myself. When we first got cable, 'long about '86, the movie channels were showing the hell out of it, and I quickly got tired of it. Later, the film became scarce, and all I had to show for it was a damaged VHS copy, in 'EP' (I say 'damaged,' because perhaps the first 12 to 15 minutes of it had been accidently taped over - my copy picked up at the point when Elijha is repairing the plane's fuel line).

I'm very pleased that it's out on DVD.

Audiences don't recommend this movie, due to Charlton Heston's axings, Mancuso getting too much wet and pre-Fool for Love, pre-No Mercy and pre-Batman Kim Basinger screaming.

reply

So you think they had difficulty relating to Charlton Heston as villain? I didn't.

I just watched this film and really enjoyed it. Charlton Heston was excellent in a colorful dual role.

I'm a totally bitchin' bio writer from Mars!

Kim Basinger is a wonderful screamer in this movie. She later screamed just like that in Fool for Love, No Mercy, Nadine, Batman (1989), The Marrying Man, Bless the Child and Cellular.
