Missing vs. The Official Story

Both of these films are about people who disappeared in South America during a 1970s war. Both of them are also Oscar winners from the 1980s.

I think both are good movies but "The Official Story" was more slow-paced than I expected, so my initial reaction to it was to be a little disappointed. So I liked "Missing" a lot more.

If you've seen both, which one do you prefer?

I agree with you. I saw both movies and 'The Official Story' is slow paced. When I was watching it on DVD I fast forwarded through some of it. I kept thinking, 'How long is this movie?"

I like both films but prefer Missing with its wonderfully sustained paranoia and great work by Lemmon and Spacek. Sissy's post-curfew scene a classic, and this is one of Lemmon's greatest performances.

If you don't mind the 11 year delay I can answer this. Yes I saw both and Missing is one of my all time favorite films! In my top 25 at least. This was a true story about the Nixon/Kissinger/CIA backed overthrow of the democratically elected government of Allende in Chile, which was a democracy longer than the US. They installed Pinochet and proceeded to torture and kill all opponents of the new regime. Including Charles Horman which the film is about. I wonder if they'll ever make a film about Victor Jara. But I thought Jack Lemmon and Sissy Spacek were both incredible in this one! Actually I'm about to rewatch it.
Anyway, Official Story was less memorable about kids being kidnapped from opponents of the Fascist Argentine regime. Still an important story though. Let's hope the US never again supports Fascism...oh wait.
