Was this soundtrack ever released on CD?

No. Just LP and Tape.

I don't think so, but most of it is taken from Mendelssohn's A Midsummer Night's Dream and the Scottish Symphony. I particularly loved the use of this music, as it gave an air of enchantment to the whole story. Woody seems to know how to use music very effectively, i. e. Rhapsody in Blue for Manhattan, Prokofiev's Lieutenant Kije for Love and Death. Particularly I loved the scene where they were running through the woods.

You're right about the Mendelsshohn. In fact, he receives sole credit for it! I'd go buy these and if you want, sift through until you find the pieces from the film---or just enjoy some great music.
