Aspect Ratio : 1,85 or 1,66 ?

I've seen "Les Maitres du Temps" when i was 5 years old, in 1982, it was the second movie i saw on a cinema screen (the first one was "Flash Gordon" in 1980, i was 3 years old).
A that time, no TV at home, so you can imagine that a cinema screen was for me something AMAZING, a new UNIVERSE.

I have a question about the picture aspect ratio for this movie.
IMDB page indicates a 1,85:1 aspect ratio, but the DVD is in 1,66:1.
Do you know the original aspect ratio ?

I cannot say that this is the reason for the discrepancy but I know that the American Academy standard aspect ratio is 1:85 whereas the European standard is 1:66. Seeing that the film is French in origin that might be the reason.
But like I said, that was just an educated guess. Either way there is just a bit more picture on the top and bottom of the frame in the 1:66 aspect ratio.
