The ending, a question

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS
(Mind you if I start a post called the ending, obviously there's going to be a spoiler)

The twist at the end really got me, finding out that Piel was actually the old guy on the ship.

But now I am confused with the timeline of the story.

When the boy's spaceship crashed on the planet, his dad (was it his dad?) told him to go and hide and gave him this transmitter to get in touch with Jaffar so that he could help him, as I understand Jaffar was a friend of him.

But how could Jaffar have been a friend of his dad (or tutor) while at the same time having known the old guy for a while, it doesn't add up.

The way I understood it, if the time masters projected the planet back in time, Piel only then went back in time by then, so it would not have been possible for his dad to know Jaffar.

Also I guess there is the small problem of Piel being at the 2 places (and age) at the same time?

Don't get me wrong I loved this film but I am a litrle confused still

reply

It really is a fantastic film....but a little depressing.

It's implied that the transmissions were from many many years ago...

From what I understand, Perdide was completely destroyed by the time they got to it and the Time Masters manipulated time by pushing Jaffar’s spaceship into the future which in turn killed Silbad/Piel in the process. I’m not sure how much time they jumped. The transmission’s Jaffar was receiving from young Piel were all from the past...we just didn’t know how far back.

What is not explained, however, is why Piel and Silbad (the old man) can have a discussion through "mike".

For what it's worth, it is often said in reviews and interviews that Piel and Silbad are the same person.

I think you're both trying to make it more complex than it is. Claude is Piel's father, but I don't think it was a spaceship they were travelling in – it looked more like multi-purpose land/water vehicle to me. I presumed that Claude and his spouse (Anna, or Annie, or something like that) were scientists/explorers researching the planet Perdide, though what they are and how they got there is outside the scope of the film.

The two microphone things communicate almost instantaneously, like an ansible. Perdide, with Piel on it, is there, at the same time, for the all the while that Jaffar and co. are chatting with him. However, neither of them had any inclination that the Time Masters were planning to send Perdide back in time, which they started to do at around the same time that Jaffar was approaching it. The people who ran that giant floaty hospital thing (I've nicknamed it the 'Life Star' ^_-) DID know about this, and were patrolling the area with the aim making sure that no one else got too close. And it would appear that neither the Masters of Time, nor the Life Star people knew about Claude, Anna and Piel being on the planet – otherwise they would probably have tried to rescue them before all of this confusion started.

I've also worked out that when Perdide was sent back 60 years, this also altered the position of the planet in its orbit (though I don't understand, and don't care to know, why). Thus it appeared to disappear from where Jaffar was heading, and appeared where Igor was heading. Igor took him home, and renamed him Silbad, and he seems to have forgotten his old name (a lot can be put down to the handy explanation of having giant hornets attempt to suck out his brains). Either he returned to Perdide during his lifetime, or still vividly remembers some of his childhood experiences (again, brain damage could have weirded out the way his memory works). Though just as legitimate is that he knew Piel was him, and did what he remembered was done to him (thus avoiding a paradox) but didn't let on about this to other members the crew, so as not to weird them out and make them worry unnecessarily.

reply

I really didn't think the Masters of Time were good people. The back of the DVD box states that they are evil. I don't think they would have helped rescue Claude or Piel...but they didn't know that they were on Perdide to begin with.

Through paradox, can you explain why Piel and Silbad have a working conversation through the microphone? That is the biggest mystery in this movie. Everything else I can figure out. I completely believe that Piel and Silbad are the same person...I just don't know how that that conversation was possible.

reply

At least in the American dub (dont know about the French) they say the MIKE is quite rare in that it can communicate instantaneously through space.

space/time is intertwined so it could also communicate through time as well.

reply

I think this film cannot explain the paradox it creates. And that is what I like about it. This is the one film I know that expresses what a messy issue time travel can be.

reply

i noticed too that jaffar knows claude (and jaffar receives a micro from claude) and knows sinblad. the movie don't explain that.

reply

Well doesn't one of the people in the 'hospital planet' says that when the Time Masters send a planet back in time, its population continues to live on their lives not realizing they were sent back in time? If that is the case, then Claude, Piel (and the mom) are from the same time as Jaffar. Then, at the end of the movie, Perdide is sent 60 years back, Igor finds Piel that in the next 60 years (up to when the movie starts) grows up to be the Silbad in the movie.

(man I just realize how hard it is to make coherent and concise sentences when talking about time travel paradoxes haha)

reply

I think clopezhuici got it right. There is no real paradox in here.
Let me explain things more chronologically:

Igor travels in his spaceship, suddenly a planet appears out of nowhere. Trying to understand what happened, Igor see Piel attacked by these creatures and helps him. Since Piel damaged his brain, it is possible that he either lost his memory or repressed it, since he is only 6 years old and this is what usually happens with childhood traumas. During the next 60 years he was living his life as Silbad, and since Igor told him where he found him, Silbad was studying that planet - Perdide.

Meantime Jaffar and Claude were born and became friends. Jaffar also got to meet Silbad. Claude went to Perdide to research it, taking Piel with him. This is when the film starts. Piel is able to contact Jaffar through the devise, Jaffar went to Perdide's specialist Silbad, and both are trying to save Piel.

In the end when they approach Perdide time masters move the planet with Piel to the past, and causing some shock to Silbad, which is dying now and being in coma his repressed memories comes out.

No one was sent to the future, Claude is not from different time line than Jaffar. The only person that traveled in time was Piel, that became Silbad and couldn't remember anything.

This actually makes the story work, so it's probably the most logical way it happened, but who knows. I just liked the guy before this post saying that talking in time paradoxes is really hard to make sense of hehe. The film is so wonderful and magical that I tend not to get caught up in the technicalities, the film seems to work whether you can make sense of it or not but it is nice to see people getting involved in the theories of time travel and how it works in this movie, I hope you are satisfied with whatever you come up with!! all the best

reply

Being sent back in time did not change the planets current position in it's orbit, however when sent back it ended up at the same spot as it had in the future - hereby suddenly popping up infront of Igor.

This is obviously a gigantic paradox though.

Some say that time is only an illusion - that the past, present and future already exist, but as humans we only experience it all in a straight-ahead, and chronological time-line...

I liked that Piel and Silbad were the same person - took me 2 viewings of the film to get that and much of the plot, as the beautiful animation and music score were what caught my attention first. How Piel and Silbad can talk through 'Mike', and Jaffar know both Pile's father Claude and the old man Silbad, seems to say that Piel/Silbad's life is in a kind of 'Time-Loop' endless contimuum, because of what the Time Masters did in sending planet Perdide back in time 60 years?

BTW - the one Time Master, seen briefly - was he an alien? He was bright green, and I could not tell if he was an alien, or a human/humanoid wearing a special 'Time-Suit' or other costume/spacesuit?

Anyways, I enjoy all sci-fi stories involving time travel and time paradoxes, and this film had a real good one... Though I get a headache if I try to figure it all out, in a completely logical way.

A truly fantastic and wonderful animated film. I look forward to it being on Bluray disc sometime soon...

I think that is a really good explanation. I was wondering how Piel and his father were on the planet in the first place. Were the Time Masters trying to eliminate him though?

Been trying to read the book, it's in French and I'm not great with the language but from what I can understand it seems that the reason for the time difference is that the ship travelling to Perdide was travelling close to the speed of light and as such time passed normally for the crew, but on Perdide 100 years passed. That wouldn't explain the presence of Piel on the ship in his older form (I need to learn more French and re read it), but it is interesting how the animated movie differs from the original concept.

It's actually really simple:

Claude and Jaffar were friends - Claude moves to Peride with his family - sometime later his wife is killed and he escapes with his son - He calls Jafar right before he dies, Jaffar and his crew, including old Piel talk to young Piel.

THEN

The Time Masters come and send the planet back in time. Piel gets rescues. But he was so young that he might have forgotten everything, particularly with those insects eating part of his brain.

Silbad/Piel then spends the next 60 years in the past, getting to know Jaffar, but not his father. As you see through their convo Silbad refers to Claude only as Jaffar's friend.

It was a land rover type vehicle, not a ship.

What you are missing is that the story starts in the movies present. But at some point the planet is taken by the Time Masters and moved into the past. At a guess this co-incides with when the boy loses the communicator.

And due to the damage to his head he doesnt remember any of it as Silbad.

Theres a simmilar odd time twist in Gandahar/Light Years.

reply

I thought of that too... Time Master "move" the planet to 60 years ago...

So, the boy and father arrived in the "present", the boy is lost there for at least a month... in wich time unfortunatelly the Time Masters Move the planet to 60 years ago, the boy is attacked by the monsters and is saved by the space sailor... the computer of the sailor's ship even tell that the planet come from the future and they almost crashed...

reply

I've read the thread and I get brain ache! All I know is that Piel and Silbad were one and the same. The reason for this is the way the film is edited and Jaffar's comment about no one knowing Slbad's childhood.

I give my respect to those who have earned it; to everyone else, I'm civil.

reply

It's really simple:
.
-In the present, Piel talks to the crew and etc.
-After Piel loses the communicator, the Time Masters "move" the planet to 60 years in the past (this is stated in the movie) (tell about timing)
-60 years ago, that spacecraft almost crashes in that planet (the pilot tells it), and he rescues Piel, leaving the planet 60 years ago, and then Piel gets older and is the old Silbad with the crew...
.
It is very simple as that, no headaches needed...
