Is Errol not all there?

I think Errol has a screw loose. Especially when he shouts racist abuse about his own race. What are other peoples views on this?

reply

I don't recall him shouting things about his own race, but he does express hatred at the Pakistanis when he and Trevor throw the stones through the windows near the end. It could be that he is a racist himself, or that he was trying to impress Trevor being that he seemed to be the only person who regarded as anything other than just a face in the crowd as it were.

reply

I am certain Errol shouts "YOU BABOONS GET BACK TO THE JUNGLE" while smashing the windows with Trevor.

reply

Oh yeah. I do recall that now. Well, I have nothing now.

reply

Errol was shouting at the Pakistani/Asian community, not his own race, that was clearly african or afro carribean

reply

"YOU BABOONS GET BACK TO THE JUNGLE" is not something you would say to the asian community to offend them. It is something you would say to the black community.

reply

easyily led character. didnt roths character call him a baboon earlier so because hes not clever maybe hes just copying

Buy the ticket take the ride

reply

Yes i know, but it is what he called out as him and Trevor were throwing the bricks throughtthe pakistani peoples houses.........

reply

another reason hes not all there is hes black hanging out with a neo nazi and he ttok an order to *beep* on his books and he did it

Buy the ticket take the ride

reply

Eroll is portraid as having learning difficulties. i haven't seen it for years but i think he did call the asians baboons

reply

Also if you remember, Errol was making racist remarks at his school, as it said on his report when Trevor read it.

reply

Yeah i forgot about that, what a mixed up character.

reply

probably the most complex character of the story outside of Trevor.

fair enough. I meant complicated in a different way, not movie-like way. For instance, if we have a case of a black character pitted with a racist skinhead, said black character will have to portray a tough love type saint who holds all moralintegrity intact, a la american history x, which was totally not the case here. It was unexpected and subversive to have such a weak, pathetic character tag alongside Trevor don't you think?

Just like sickdog said - the use of "baboons" and "jungle" is not a slur aimed at the Pakistani community in England - it's aimed at the West Indian and African communities ie black people. He therefore is DEFINATELY referring to blacks when he said it - not to Asians.

He certainly has a screw loose

reply

common misunderstanding - skinheads and West Indians were fine with each other, both groups hated the pakistanis though, and this led the media to simplistically declare skinheads as racist.

It was never the case, in the early days at least, as the WI music was important to the skinhead culture, that gave rise to the Rude Boy movement in the 80s.

Shame racism is too complex for the media to understand :-)

1) Pakistan does indeed have jungle terrain.

2) Pakistan has primates. Not Baboons, mind you, but there are primates.

So, while Errol's yell was classic British xenophobic foolishness, it wasn't topically off-base.

reply

The cycle of abuse typically has people heaping upon others what has been heaped upon them.

"And a Happy New Year to you, George Bailey.... in jail!"

reply

I'm in the middle of watching 'Made in Britain'. I think they've got the language/vernacular spot on. Having an anarchistic punk brother, who is still rebellious in his late thirties, I feel I have lived through this film. The anger is all there; and my brother still has it. He never went in for the racist stuff though. Will comment more at end of film.

I find the phrase " not all there " insulting actually....

Guys, you if listen very carefully to the scene where Trevor and Errol are throwing bricks through the windows, you can hear Errol shout *beep* black n**gers'.

reply

I don't recall that, but, it is possible that Errol had prejudices against his on race. Its not rare. Being told you're inferior over and over again has to wear away at your self-esteem. Also, being sterotyped and seeing those sterotypes protrayed over and over again truthfully in real life with your own race, tends to tick people off. So not all that difficult to imagine people having contempt about their own race's actions. Errol himself embodies the sterotype of a young black juvenile delinquent, the by-product of a broken home and drunk mother. So it's possible he's taking out his anger on them because of this.

It's also likely that Errol's a lonely and impressionable kid. A follower, who because Trevor invited him along feels inclined to oblige him in his endeavor even though he might get in trouble. So he copies him.

reply

He never did shout anything about his own race. DO some research and you'll find out that there was a ton of black skins in the early days of the movement that where all into paki-bashin as much as their white counterparts. Check out the old reggea-song called "A Bash Dem" about kickin down pakistanis. The group was all black hust like Errol.
